Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 13 – Quick Summary

In Grisaia: Phantom Trigger episode 13, “Phantom Children,” Haruto searched for his nemesis Kuroe, but he was running out of time. Would he be able to find her, and confront his past, before the dam collapsed on top of them? Ichiru, meanwhile, was able to confront an old friend who had betrayed her. What words of advice did she have for this person? And what was the point of the whole operation?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 13: Nogami made the point that manners are always important

Nogami told it like it was. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I liked Ichiru well enough – strong women characters will always attract my attention! – but in terms of the adults in the show, my favorite was Nogami. She was calm under pressure. I mean, she used her shoes in the final episode to put down some enemy soldiers.

That takes no small amount of strength and coordination! I would have tripped trying to get my shoes off!

Nogami also spoke her mind, even to her boss. When Ichiru finished talking to Enishi, she tossed her mostly finished cigarette into the rising water.

“It’s not polite to litter,” Nogami said (12:31). She wasn’t joking, either.

“Does it really matter if I littlehere?” To be fair, the dam was coming apart all around them.

“It’s a question of manners.”

“Okay, okay. Fine.”

Nogami drove her point home by saying, “Be more careful in the future.”

I could get along with someone who’s blunt like that.

Favorite Moment from Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 13

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 13: Ichiru had enough of self-righteousness

I really had the feeling she was fed up with it all. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Well. I’m glad I watched this. I think it suffered from my expectations. Going into it, I thought it would be more like The Fruit of Grisaia. I kept comparing Haruto to Yuuji Kazami (who reminded me a lot of a non-magical version of Tatsuya Shiba). I also preferred the female cast from the earlier work. But my expectations are my problem. I can’t disparage a show for not meeting my expectations.

The world owes me nothing.

Haruto’s confrontation with Kuroe felt emotionally satisfying. I would have liked to have seen more, but I don’t think the point of that scene was the action. It was Haruto mastering himself when he could not before. He overcame his inner demons and managed to take Kuroe down.

I get it. I understand the narrative drivers. But I still feel like she got off easy. Enishi, too. Sure, he choked to death on his own blood. Sure, it seems like the finishing shot came from Rando Soldier. Still.

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 13: Enishi got off easy

All things considered, I think he got off easy in the end. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

My favorite moment was Ichiru showing a deep understanding of how the world worked. After blowing cigarette smoke in Enishi’s face (a nice touch), Ichiru said (08:24), “But is spreading hate in the name of ‘helping others’ and forcing your beliefs on them really justice? Those who are addicted to self-righteousness never take a step back to look at themselves. That’s how they deceive, steal, destroy, and kill as they wave their flag of justice.”

That’s the kind of show this was. Intellectual, precise. Insightful. And too on point for me, given the times we live in. The “addiction to self-righteousness” might well be the end of us. At the very least, it’s going to leave a mark.

Though I’ll miss the snipers…What did you think of Rena trying to track down Hauto? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
