Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 9 – Quick Summary

In Grisaia: Phantom Trigger episode 9, “Rite of Passage,” the team assisted the military in an operation against a terrorist organization. Chihiro Ukawa tried to approach the topic delicately, but it turned out that Haruto already knew: Enishi Urushihara was helping the terrorist organization The Fatal Answer. Moreover, Haruto knew something else: that Enishi and his minion, Kuroe Samejima, had been responsible for the death of his master, Aoi. Can Haruto maintain his cool? Or will the lure of revenge become too great?

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 9: Chris tried to explain away her actions with Taiga

Chris tried to defend herself, but I think she knew Haruto had her dead to rights. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

We’re up to episode nine, and they haven’t had a focus episode for my two favorite characters: the sniper pair, Touka and Megumi. That’s a bummer, but I got a bit of a consolation prize in this episode.

The two were on an assignment. They happened to see two intruders kill a father and menace a little girl. Touka had one of the bad guys in her sights. She urgently requested clearance to fire. See, it turns out that SORD did not have not have jurisdiction over civilian incidents.

Their commander said they’d be sued if they intervened. Can you guess how Touka reacted? Megumi, even though she wasn’t in favor of disobeying orders, helped. They dropped the two would-be rapists at the same instant.

Of course, for appearance’s sake, the military leadership had to yell a Haruto. He said he would take care of it. Protocol satisfied, the military guy left.

Chris took him to task, saying (10:11), “Touka-san never learns her lesson because you spoil her like that.”

Yes. That was the same Chris who had skirted orders to rescue Taiga. Seems like Haruto likes to spoil the women under his command. Which makes sense, in the context of my favorite moment.

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 9: Haruto allowed his thirst for revenge to overrule his reason

I hope that at some point he realizes Rena just saved his life. Dude was in no shape to confront the precision weapon that is Kuroe. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Aoi’s death hit Haruto hard. Not easy to see, given his easy-going facade. But he felt it deeply. So deeply that it not only affected his judgement. It shaped it.

Chihiro might have suspected. Or maybe he was just cautious about the topic. But when he told Haurto that Enishi and Kuroe were involved with TFA, he watched Haruto carefully. But he only saw that carefully engineered facade.

Later, Shiori Arisaka saw Haruto take possession of Aoi’s repaired sword. As he thrust it and its scabbard into his belt, Shirori looked on. You could see the concern in her face. She sensed something was wrong, but from the perspective of the audience, she was the perfect witness. Her concern drew our attention to the sword and its implication. But Shirori would have no idea what to do with that concern.

So when Haruto finally confronted Kuroe, we knew: dude was not going to be calm about it. He ripped into her despite the number of bullets she sent his way. He managed to cut her pistol in half, which seemed to concern her.

So much that she launched a very effective psychological weapon. Calmly, because I think she only speak calmly, she said (19:58), “I thought you were much more calm and collected. But I guess you’re hot-blooded, just like that woman.”

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Episode 9: Kuroe is a precision weapon

Did she know how to set a barb or what? Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

He rushed her.

Rena Fukami showed up and opened fire. She’s good, but she wasn’t good enough to anticipate Kuroe’s movements. Kuroe escaped. Thinking she had just helped her master, Rena could only stare in cold realization at the raw frustrated fury on Haurto’s face (20:24).

Afterward, she confided in Maki Inohara (20:39): “I shouldn’t have interfered.”

I appreciated how this episode prepared me for Haruto’s actions. He’s usually calm and affable. We’ve seen he can be ruthless, too. But letting go of his driving need to avenge Aoi’s death was too much for him. And now, it’s affecting his team – after all, Rena’s confidence has been compromised. This is an interesting setup for the next confrontation.
