Healer Girl Episode 7 Review – Quick Summary

In Healer Girl episode 7, “A Culture Festival Full of Surprises,” Kana had taken on a lot of work. Despite that, she tried to make time to experience the cultural festival with her friends. Hibiki happily accompanied Kana. Sonia did, too, though she ate too much because of her fierce spirit of competition. Even Reimi pried herself away from her Mistress Ria to hang out with them. But then the student council president came to them with an emergency request. Does Kana have the energy to respond? Will her friends help? And how long will it take Sonia to feel better after eating so much?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Healer Girl Episode 7: Sonia didn't let a little nausea get in her way

Despite feeling terrible, Sonia maintained her facade. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Sonia continued to be a lot of fun to watch in this episode. She’s as haughty as ever, yet her warmth towards children and her legitimate singing and even leadership skills made her an interesting character.

In this episode, we got to see what happens when she combines her creativity with her extreme self-confidence. Sonia wanted to enjoy the festival. No, she wanted to Enjoy it with a capital “E!” She saw everything as a competition, even eating. So she attacked the food stalls with gusto.

Kana kept up, but it looked like she practiced self-discipline. Put another way: she didn’t eat herself sick. Sonia ate so much so fast that she had to lie down.

Her friend Shinobu suggested she see the nurse.

Surprisingly, Sonia agreed. “When conquering a festival,” she said weakly (09:50), “one cannot neglect a visit to the nurse’s office.”

She didn’t want to look weak, so she cast her trip to the nurse as just another aspect of enjoying the festival. That was creative, and I have to give her credit for not letting a little stomach ache get her down!

Best in Show Moment for Healer Girl Episode 7

Healer Girl Episode 7: Reimi realized she had just stomped on Kana's dream

Reimi realized what she had done even though Kana tried to put on a cheerful face. I think Sonia realized it, too. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: The President Wanted a Surprise

I’m not sure which show has a higher level of kindness: this show or SPY x FAMILY. After considering the question, I’m going to give the edge to Healer Girl. After all, if you make Reimi angry, she’s unlikely to do anything more than smack you. Yor might do something a lot more permanent.

Brief moments where the characters either overtly did something nice for each other, or, with a look or a small gesture, conveyed a feeling of warmth to one another, filled this episode. One of my favorite moments was one of those.

Healer Girl Episode 7: Kana felt grateful for Hibiki and Reimi's help

Kana was surprised – and grateful! – that her friends offered to help at the Russian food stall. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

The student council president asked Kana and friends to sing because the indie band they had booked had gotten into a car accident. While discussing who would play what position in their band, something became clear: Kana was the only one who didn’t know how to play an instrument. So, Sonia suggested Kana sing lead. Otherwise, Kana would have nothing to do, and that would offend Sonia’s sense of symmetry.

The idea of singing lead appealed to Kana. At least, it did until the student council said it lacked “surprise.” The president said Kana’s voice was great and all, but it lacked the surprise punch she wanted.

Delivery: Reimi Accidentally Trounces Kana’s Feelings

Reimi had what, in the moment, seemed like a perfect idea: ask Mistress Ria to sing! She’s renowned, after all. The president enthusiastically agreed and asked her minion to call Ria on the PA (on a side note, her minion sliding backwards out of the room, without moving his feet, made me smile).

Sounds like a great idea, right? Even Kana thought so. At least, that’s what she said. As Kana spoke, did you see Reimi’s face? You can see the exact moment that Reimi’s feelings changed from proud excitement to guilt (14:21). Without realizing it, Reimi had just taken Kana’s prized role away from her.

The camera zoomed in on Reimi just long enough to drive the point home. There was no dialogue and no stringed instruments. Just Reimi’s expression.

Healer Girl Episode 7: Reimi felt terrible

The animators’ work here effectively dramatized the moment. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

It was a moment that conveyed an authentic emotion. Reimi had no intention of hurting her friend. Yet, that’s just what she had done! And Reimi’s shocked remorse struck her speechless. Ria declined the invitation, being the thoughtful teacher and healer that she is. She knew what was going on at a glance. But seeing how much Reimi cared about Kana — enough that Reimi even regretted suggesting Ria’s name — impressed the heck out of me.

What did you think about Kana’s class cafe, where they served “fresh” treats (fresh from the convenience store)? What were your favorite moments? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I thought it must be awfully hard to play instruments in those mascot suits, and then remembered that there’s a metal band called Charamel, which consists entirely of regional mascot characters. It’s definitely not impossible…

This show is so full of pretty natural kindness that it’s one of the best pick-me-up shows we’ve had in recent seasons. And it’s something I sorely need these days.

  2. This Episode of Healer Girl has been brought to you by its sponsor, Queen’s Milk Of Melodia. Overate but need to perform a healing concert? Trust the #1 brand endorsed by board certified Medical Musician Freddy Mercury. Queen’s Milk Of Melodia. Now on sale at your nearest CVS, Walgreens and KISH (Knights In the Service Of Hippocrates) Pharmacy near you.

    1. Now you’ve got me wondering what kind of healing Freddy Mercury could do!

I also wonder about the flip side. If singing can cure, could they could also use it as a weapon? Could Freddy Mercury’s voice punch through heavy armor (as in tanks) with select parts of Bohemian Rhapsody?

Please let me know what you think!
