Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 15 – Quick Summary
In Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 15, “Reality and Fantasy,” Gabimaru faced off against Choubei Aza, and both men were determined to kill the other. As the fight wore on, it became obvious they might both obtain their goal: killing the other. Can anyone stop the fight before it goes too far? Can Touma Yamada Asaemon convince his brother to stand down? Can Mei get through to Gabimaru? And will the island let them fight unmolested?

Favorite Quote from Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 15

This was a big episode for Gantetsusai Tamiya. He gets both my favorite quote and favorite moment. At least, he played a role in the latter.
At the beginning of this episode, our heroes were divided into two groups: Sagiri, Yuzuriha, Shion, and Nurugai in one group, and Gantetsusai, Gabimaru, Fuchi, and Mei in the other. The former group had taken a breather in the enemy’s castle, but under Sagiri’s direction, they were about out to search for their friends.
At the same time, the other group decided to come back to the castle in the hopes of finding their friends. They were both shocked to run into each other at the castle gate.
Sagiri was very worried about the unconscious Gabimaru. Fuchi was very upset to learn that his friend Senta had died. It was a nice touch that they left his eyeglasses on the grave.
Gantetsusai had a much less sentimental reaction. When he saw Yuzuriha, he said to her (11:26), “Lady with the great ass, you’re alive!”
She didn’t seem in the list bit bothered when she answered, “Yeah. Awesome, right?”
I think he actually meant it as a compliment.
Favorite Moment from Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 15

Setup: Something Non-Bloody Happened?
This episode had some surprisingly emotional moments. Maybe it’s only surprising because I didn’t expect any of those scenes this early in the season. Now that I say that, I hope it doesn’t mean we’re about to see another bloodbath.
Though who am I kidding? This is Hell’s Paradise. Of course we’re going to see a blood bath. It’s just a matter of when.
I was glad to see that Sagiri knew instantly that Gabimaru wasn’t right. “Who are you?” she asked almost as soon as he regained consciousness (13:59). She immediately set about trying to use her tao to heal him.

Honestly, I was afraid he’d stay an enemy for half the season or more. I hate detours like that. I’m not sure why, but they annoy the daylights out of me. It’s worse than misunderstandings in a cheap romantic comedy.
Fortunately, it was more or less a narrative device to freak us out at the end of the first season so we’d come back and see if he was okay at the beginning of the second. So, mission accomplished, I guess!
Delivery: The Measure of a Man
Gabimaru was starting to get his memories back when Yuzuriha’s rational self-preservation mode kicked in. Gabimaru said that he had to fight through this island. That way, he could take the elixir back to the shogun and get his pardon. With the pardon, he could go home to his wife, Yui.
Yuzuriha said that Gabimaru’s master implanted the illusion of Yui into his mind. She wanted Gabimaru to understand that it was fruitless, so they might as well go home.
What followed almost qualified as my favorite moment. Gabimaru explained the subtle moments that convinced him Yui was real. I hope the guy’s right. I hope that at the end of this series, he can go home to his wife. But in the meantime, I’ll just root for him to survive to the next day.
Gantetsusai made me nervous. He said (21:47), “So you’re dragging us into this so you can see your sweetheart?” I was afraid he was disparaging Gabimaru.
“She’s my wife,” Gabimaru answered.

“You’re a real man,” Gantetsusai answered. “I like you.”
Gantetsusai is turning into one of my favorite characters. That’s actually saying a lot, given his competition in this show (e.g., Sagiri, Gabimaru, Shion, and Yuzuriha).
