Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 20 – Quick Summary

In Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 20, “Two People and One Person,” Gabimaru and Yuzuriha weren’t the only ones to engage the Tensen. Fuchi, Gantetsusai, and Touma did, too. Their encounter had an added wrinkle: Choubei was with the Tensen. Worse, he asked touma to join them with the promise of immortality. What chance does Fuchi and Gantetsusai have against those odds? Is it better for them if Touma joins the other side, so they don’t have an uncertain ally? And how are Sagiri and Mei doing?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Favorite Quote from Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 20

Hell's Paradise Season 2 Episode 20: Touma and Choubei make an effective team.

These guys are really dangerous together. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

This was in contention for my favorite moment. It got edged out for pure shock-and-guts value. But I should probably focus on this quote, huh?

Choubei asked Touma to change sides in exchange for immortality. I don’t think Touma really cared about that; I think he wanted to be reunited with this brother. Gantetesuai even encouraged him to do so. I felt kinda proud by guessing Gantetesuai’s real motivation, which he revealed when he said (04:49), “It’s just easier to control an uncertain enemy than an uncertain ally.”

The animation did a solid job ratcheting up the drama as Touma mounted the steps toward his brother and the waiting Ju Fa and Tao Fa. The shot drove home all wasn’t as it seemed. Would Choubei take his brother and run? Did he have some other plan? How did he communicate it to his brother?

Then came the moment that Touma and Choubei turned on the two Tensen. Fantastic moment – I saw it coming but didn’t. It was enormously satisfying. Managed to (temporarily) put down both Tensen.

As I was still trying to work out how Touma knew, because their moves were perfectly coordinated, Tousma began braiding some of Choubei’s loose hair and said (06:04), “If you untie your braid, you’re lying. That’s a basic signal.”

Very cool quote; very cool moment. Almost cool enough to be my favorite!

Favorite Moment from Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 20

Hell's Paradise Season 2 Episode 20: Gantetsusai had admirable resolve

Well, one must at least admire his resolve. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Gantetsusai is a Man of Great Passion

I appreciate Gantetesuai’s perspective. He’s not at all shy when it comes to handing out compliments. Remember how he was complimentary, and appreciative, of Yuzuriha’s form in episode 15?, though in polite society we’d probably take him aside and suggest he find a different way to deliver his sentiment.

Which would probably provoke the big guy’s temper, so it’s probably best he’s in another universe.

Well, given his appreciation of what Yuzuriha brought to the party, you can probably guess how he reacted to Tao Fa when she stripped down to her fighting lingerie. Okay, what she wore probably didn’t qualify as lingerie, but from Gantetesuai’s perspective, her attire provoked exactly the reaction you’d expect.

Hell's Paradise Season 2 Episode 20: Tao Fa was certainly attractive

After giving the matter considerable thought, I could find no fault in Gantetsusai‘s reaction. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

“Superb!” he exclaimed (10:21), completely distracted (which was key for what happened next). “Great ass, great chest, The picture of a perfect woman!”

Shortly thereafter, she knocked him through several pillars and onto his back. The man has strong passions, but he can be distracted.

Which was part of what made my favorite moment so impactful. See, the guy’s not just passionate. He’s also dense as a rock. But it’s a porous rock. Concepts sometimes seep in, even if they’re not welcome.

As the fight wore on, it became obvious that since neither Fuchi nor Gantetesuai could see tao, they were doomed. Tao Fa was too adept at not only using tao, but using it to strike from multiple directions.

Delivery: As Well as Great Resolve

At one point in the battle, Gantetsusai, his right eye swollen and bloody, saw tao. The sight enabled him to evade. But the ability evaded him after that.

Seeing Fuchi down, seeing Tao Fa about to finish him off, Gantetesuai had to face his limitations. He had to confront the denseness that was his brain. And true to his nature as thinking like a main battle tank, he reasoned that if he could almost see tao with one of his eyes bloodied, and if his good eye was between him and seeing tao, then obviously, that eye had to go.

Hell's Paradise Season 2 Episode 20: Gantetsusai's plan worked, but ie was expensive!

His plan worked – but damn, what a cost! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

From his point of view, the decision made sense. I would have been tempted to take another direction, but, to be truthful, I doubt I’d be on that island in the first place. Besides, the moment isn’t my favorite because of the reasoning that led up to the decision.

It was the sheer guts and resolve of its implementation. The dude just used his hook (where his left hand had been) to rip out his own eye (21:37). Talk about dedication to a cause! Even better, it worked! He could see tao! I’m not saying it was the right decision. But I have to acknowledge it worked.

What did you think of Tao Fa’s assertion that no, none of the Tensen were having fun? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to share in the comments!

  1. TCrow, I meant to post this last week but forgot to.

It’s been established that Asaemon ranks are based on one’s overall suitability to be the clan leader, which means that strength isn’t the sole determining factor. Jikka is a guy who doesn’t want to get himself involved with danger and doesn’t seem to enjoy working hard by his saying he can’t draw his sword, so if that’s the case, he must be immensely powerful, perhaps moreso than Shugen is given Shugen being such a devout killer of criminals possibly makes him a very suitable clan head compared to Jikka.

Mei talked about someone with a huge Tao among the next exhibition, and while one might be convinced that it’s Shugen with a huge Tao given his ability to perceive Tao, it may actually be referring to the quality of Jikka’s Tao. Perhaps Jikka has such a powerful Tao and says that he can’t draw his sword not ’cause he literally can’t do so but ’cause he can imbue his own sword with his Tao and only wants to use his sword in such a fashion, and thus, he escaped Shisenkyo by using Tao to cut straight through the currents that were leading back to Shisenkyo with his sword. Episode 19 pointing out that weapons can be imbued with Tao backs up this theory.

    1. I remember Jikka saying something about drawing his sword. I had the impression he really meant “because something dreadful will happen” as opposed to the physical impossibility.

I’m looking forward to finding out! Just like I’m looking forward to finding out how Gabimaru gets out of his predicament!

Please let me know what you think!
