Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 21 – Quick Summary

In Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 21, “Chrysanthemum and Peach,” Gantetsusai and Fuchi continued their assault on Tao Fa. But Gantetsusai’s element did not hinder Tao Fa’s, and Gantetsusai had considerably less tao than his enemy. With Fuchi already injured, what hope do they have? And how’re the brothers Touma and Choubei doing against Ju Fa?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Hell's Paradise Season 2 Episode 21: Fuchi remained remarkably calm

Kinda hard to stay calm in situations like that! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I can relate to Fuchi. There are times in the middle of crisis and chaos that I just go calm and deal with the situation. I’ll likely freak out later. But I’ve annoyed many folks in my family by being a voice of reason in an emotional moment.

I’m at peace with that.

Fuchi showed that reasonableness in this episode. He, Gantetsusai, Touma, and Choubei just witnessed the birth of whatever, the result of the fusion of Tao Fa and Ju Fa. I’ll tell you what, it was a terrifying beast. It reminded me of something out of Lovecraft. In a good way. If the word “good” can be used in this context.

Gantetsusai watched the monstrosity crash through the roof and remarked that he felt amazed the thing could fly – it looked very asymmetrical.

Fuchi, ever the observant one, said (17:14), “I agree. Structurally, it should be impossible. Twisted and unnatural, yet somehow seductive. Their appearance is like love itself.”

Well, I’m not sure what kind of love he’s observed. Makes me worried for how he was raised! But I admired his calm!

Setup: Backstories Can Be Fun

Great. Now I feel sorry for Tao Fa and Ju Fa. But, on the “bright” side, my disgust with Rien has reached new heights. So, equilibrium preserved!

This is a good example of why enlightened, intelligent judicial systems take culpability into account during sentencing. Ju Fa was this timid, kind-hearted little girl. She didn’t want to hurt people. She emphasized with them too much. Tao Fa just wanted to hang out with Ju Fa and enjoy life.

Then Rien happened.

Hell's Paradise Season 2 Episode 21: A redemption arc for Tao Fa and Ju Fa might be in order

I might be convinced to consider a redemption arc for these two. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I’m not rooting for the combined beast of Ju Fa and Tao Fa. But I do get where they’re coming from. I saw the moment Tao Fa fell into madness, unwillingly (16:06). And that makes them a memorable villain.

I wonder if they could be turned against Rien? Probably not. Even if they would agree to help our heroes, I can’t imagine our heroes could trust them.

Delivery: Gantetsusai’s Learned Resolve

My favorite came early in the story. Relatively so, anyway. We got a brief glimpse into Gantetsusai’s back story, when he was a young man training under a master. The master said things like, “Dude, you need to focus” (I’m paraphrasing, of course). Gantetsusai was all like, “Old man, I have no idea what you’re talking about most of the time.”

But, facing Tao Fa, Gantetsusai thought back on the old man’s words, and he understood. He had given up one eye to fight Tao Fa, and that, viewed in the context of his master’s teachings, gave him the insight he needed.

He cut into Tao Fa. She taunted him, saying that even with his enormous strength, he couldn’t kill her that easily.

Hell's Paradise Season 2 Episode 21: Tao Fa seemed surprised Gantetsusai could strike her

She seemed a teensy bit surprised when he was able to strike her. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

“Then I’ll spend my whole life!” he said (05:26). “An eternity! Forever and ever! Cutting you again and again!”

Gantetsusai had learned from his master, even if the effort had taken years. Seriously, if someone like him can learn, there’s hope for all of us! Even me! That’s gotta be worth a favorite moment designation!

What did you think of Choubei’s attempt to take on the combined monster? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

  1. I knew Choubei wouldn’t be able to win given his Metal Tao is weak to Ju Fa’s Fire Tao. The group will need Water Tao to be able to defeat this hybrid Kishikai state since they need Metal Tao to defeat Tao Fa and Water Tao to defeat Ju Fa. I wonder what the twist will be.

    1. You wondered what the twist would be — not sure if you’ve seen the latest episode or not, so I won’t spoil it! But your question was spot on.
