Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 22 – Quick Summary
In Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 22, “Love and Karma,” Choubei grew increasingly alarmed. The combined beast of Ju Fa and Tao Fa seemed determined to pummel him, his brother Touma, Gantetsusai, and Fuchi. Worse, there didn’t seem to be much Choubei could do about it. Will he have time to figure it out before they run out of tao – and blood? And what’s going on with Sagiri and Mei?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.
Favorite Quote from Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 22
Choubei was surprisingly circumspect. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Did we just see Choubei learn to be circumspect? I think we did! Can’t say I expected that!
As evidence for this astounding event, please let me present my favorite quote. Coubei had come up with a plan. His brother Touma had inspired him with the combined Touma/Fuchi attack.
But to make his plan work, Choubei needed Gantetsusai’s help. Now, Gantetsusai is not known as a team player. He wants to take the Tehsen’s head himself, and he wants all the glory. So he initially resisted. That’s when Choubei surprised me.
“I’m counting on you, you know,” he said to Gantetsusai, who was quite surprised (06:38). Almost as much as me! “My plan won’t work without the skills of the man unparalleled in eight provinces.”
It worked. Gantetsusai isn’t the most complex of men. Choubei’s words convinced him to support the plan. I’m just pleasantly surprised that Choubei learned such a skill!
Favorite Moment from Hell’s Paradise Season 2 Episode 22
I think it’s fair to say that Gantetsusai had never met anyone like Tao Fa. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: The Stakes Went Through the Roof
The stakes escalated in this episode, didn’t they? Even as I was basking in the warmth of Sagiri’s offer to just leave the island – I’ve always admired her maturity and clarity of thought! – Gui Fa dropped a bombshell: Rien, even now, prepared a ship full of those moths that turn people into trees. And he was going to sail her to Japan.
He was, in essence, going to turn everyone in Japan into “Banko, the god beast, and refine the perfect tan Rien seeks” (18:01).
That whole sequence was more than a little terrifying. The show spent a season and a half helping us understand the ecosystem. Now, they pointed it at the mainland and let us imagine the results. I don’t blame Sagiri for becoming physically ill after watching the tao illusion of what would happen.
Not a terribly bright future, if the Tensen have their way. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
And I thought the stakes were high before!
But as horrifying effective as that scene was, it wasn’t my favorite. Nor was it the fall of Ju Fa and Tao Fa, despite the emotion its execution evoked. I think that, in the end, Tao Fa was ready for it to be over. Ju Fa seemed less prepared, but it didn’t matter. Choubei’s plan worked, and worked well.
My favorite moment came in the aftermath.
Delivery: It’s Been Real
I said before that Gantetsusai is not the most complex of men. Nor is he the most subtle, or the most thoughtful. But he believes what he believes. Fiercely. He said in the previous episode that he thought Tao Fa was the perfect woman and that he wanted to enjoy his battle with her.
She seemed to respond to that. She’d likely become bored over the years. I think that she longed for something interesting to happen. And here comes this brute of a man with extraordinary combat abilities, and against all her expectations, she couldn’t just brush him aside. She actually seemed to enjoy herself.
Teamwork, under Choubei’s leadership, made it happen. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
So did Gantetsusai. When the battle had concluded, he put the peach her remains had become and placed it beside the dandelion that constituted Ju Fa’s remains. Quietly, he contemplated the sight and said (12:04), “I had fun, miss.”
That was probably the most honest moment we’ve seen from him. He had fought and fought hard against a worthy opponent. He had been victorious. Now, he simply wanted to honor a fallen comrade, a Tensen that he felt he had more in common with than most human. The “perfect woman,” as he had called her.
Too bad the Tensen had all gone insane. They might have had something to talk about otherwise.
What did you think of Shion’s approach to fighting the Tensen? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

Since Shion’s Tao attribute didn’t hinder Zhu Jin’s, he has to resort to exhausting all of Zhu Jin’s Tao since even Tensen have a finite amount of Tao, which is their life energy as is the case for all living beings. I guess this was clear if one thought about it given Zhu Jin is the weakest of the Tensen aside from Mei.
This episode also showed that a Tao attribute that restores a different Tao attribute powers up the user of the Tao attribute that gets restored, which is why Touma’s Earth Tao was able to power up Fuchi’s Metal Tao despite Fuchi being horrible at using Tao, allowing Fuchi to deal a mortal blow to Tao Fa.
Gabimaru’s Fire Tao also restores Yuzuriha’s Earth Tao, so he can also power up Yuzuriha’s attacks by touching Yuzuriha as she strikes Ran, and this will probably be needed to ensure that Yuzuriha can somehow land the finishing blow on Ran unless they can somehow make Ran exhaust all his Tao.
That analysis makes sense. It’s a path forward for Gabimaru not to die, anyway! So I like it from a narrative perspective.
I think we’ll find out how it plays out next week. At least, I hope so!
