In I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 11, “I Couldn’t Become a Hero, but now I’m Going to Rescue the Demon Lord’s Daughter,” the demon Raid, conspiring with Blaze and Klein, had kidnapped Fino with the intent of either forcing or tricking her into becoming the next Demon Lord. With how tender-hearted she has become, can she withstand their lies for long? Will Raul be able to find her in time? And will Airi support Blaze and Klein, Raul, or go her own way?

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 11: Blaze's words disillusioned Raul

The facts seriously disillusioned Raul. But he recovered quickly. Capture from the Blu Ray.

All through the series, Raul had an uneasy truce with the part of himself that still wanted to be a hero. He saw the peaceful world around him and knew it was preferable to war. Yet, there was a part of him that still longed for the glory and recognition of being a hero.

That ended, with finality, in this episode.

Blaze was trying to recruit Raul. He told Raul something about the heroes who had come before them. Namely, that they had knowingly entered a pact where they allowed the Demon King to live in exchange for an ongoing war – and the technological and economic development that came along with it.

In disclosing that, Blaze made a mistake. He had projected his own response onto Raul. In other words, Blaze had expected Raul to become cynical and jaded, then join them. Instead, Raul laughed. There was a hysterical edge to it. Blaze asked what was so funny, so Raul answered.

He said (05:58), “Let the Demon King reign? What a joke! I worshiped those heroes! I wanted to be like them. How pitiful… I’m such an idiot.”

Raul’s an honest man. Up until that moment, he had been a bit idealistic, too. Now, he dropped the idealism. But he held onto his honesty. And proved, as if there was any doubt, just how much better a human being he was compared to the likes of Blaze.

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 11: Seara defeated Raid with general department store merchandise

Seara seemed to have so much fun demonstrating the uses of the various magic items! Capture from the Blu Ray.

Setup: Seara, More Than a Store Manager

I feel like I’ve chosen a lot of serious moments as my favorites lately. That’s not a bad thing. The show has a surprising amount of philosophical depth to it. It also has a surprising amount of touching character moments, like Airi thinking she had killed Raul and their subsequent conversion. Which ended with her saying that “You sure can talk,” which is when both of them realized he wasn’t mortally wounded at all. But to reflect this show’s comedy foundation, I’m going to choose a moment that I thought was hilariously perfect for this show.

Since the first time we met her, I had a feeling there was something unusual about Seara August. She had a quiet authority that I found attractive. I never knew quite what to expect from her. In this episode, finally, we got a glimpse of what she can do. It was pretty impressive!

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 11: Seara could weaponize a calculator

I think this is the first time I’ve seen anyone weaponize a calculator. Capture from the Blu Ray.

The first clue was when Klein tried to attack Reon with a three-headed dragon. The assistant manager Visor Crossroads told Nova (and us!) that Seara could turn any magic item into an amazing tool. We got to see her enchant a simple calculator until it was so strong, it could disable the dragon and capture Klein.

Delivery: Elsa and Seara Tag-Teamed Raid

But the real payoff, dramatically and comedically, was near the end. Raid launched what he intended to be the killing blow against both Raul and Airi. Seara blocked it. Well, “blocked” is the wrong word. She used an enchanted vacuum cleaner to do the job (18:37). A “Python Vacuum Cleaner,” to be precise. Seara even pointed out that its “suction doesn’t lost power, no matter what it sucks up!”

That kicked off Seara’s attack on Raid – an attack that consisted solely of magic shop items. Elsa handed her different items to use. The battle went back and forth. Well, more accurately, Raid would attack, and Elsa would give Seara a different magic item to swat him aside. My favorite was one of the last. Raid dove towards Seara. Else flung what looked like a hand-held hair dryer, which Seara deftly caught and pointed at Raid, saying (20:28), “Boot up.”

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 11: Seara used a blow dryer to, of course, blow Raid away

Seara and Elsa seemed to have so much fun putting Raid down! Capture from the Blu Ray.

As the force of its air blast threw Raid into a cliff wall, Elsa added helpful color commentary, saying “It’s our hyper-turbo magic dryer. It’s not only powerful, but gentle on your hair! It moisturizes!”

The punchline? Seara simply bashed Raid over the head with a magic rice cooker. The scene made use of Seara’s hidden power, Elsa’s touted knowledge of products, and was perfectly in keeping with the show’s tone. It was a lot of fun seeing Seara and Elsa beat the haughty demon Raid with common department store items.
