I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 12 – Quick Summary

In I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 12, “I Couldn’t Become a Hero, so I Decided to get a Job,” Fino, possessed by the bloodstone Raid had forced on her, descended on the volcano that served as the demon world’s entrance. Raul, Airi, and Lamdimia Do Aximemor followed close behind. If they could not reach Fino before she descended to the throne, war would break out again. Meanwhile, Raid could not afford to lose to Seara August. And he did not yet know the true price of failure!

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 12: Seara calmly presented Raid with an invoice

Check out how happy and satisfied Seara looks! Capture from the Blu Ray.

If I had to choose a single favorite character from this series, there’s a non-zero chance I’d pick Seara. I liked the mystery she presented; I liked the power she demonstrated during her fight with Raid. I even liked how she always looked out for her people, whether that meant taking her team to dinner or fighting to protect them.

Another trait I admired was her absolute dedication to the sales. She used that skill to overcome Klein and his dragon. She also used it to overcome Raid. We saw that in the previous episode. We saw it in this episode, too.

After Raul had rescued Fino from becoming the Demon King against her will, Raid was ready to walk away. But Seara wasn’t done with him.

“You think you can just leave?” she asked with her sweetest smile (17:02). “ I have an invoice for you.”

Yet another villain who could blame their downfall on a devastating economic weapon!

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 12: Raul's talisman snapped Fino out of her possession

I’d take an order in the face over a pistol any day. Capture from the Blu Ray.

Setup: Thematically, a Clear Mirror for Our Times

Would you rather do battle with instruments of war, or instruments of finance? My favorite moment put that question in sharp relief. While there are times I will join the chorus of folks against using economic instruments to inflict damage on our enemies, my default position is simple. If we can fight without people dying, that’s preferable.

Remember when the United States acted to limit Russia’s access to the SWIFT network? A lot of folks said that was a terrible thing to do to Russia. Personally, I thought Russia invading Ukraine, a sovereign nation, was a terrible thing to do. The whole “let’s slaughter civilians to make a point” theme was particularly loathsome. So, I applauded my government for using an economic instrument as a weapon. It got our point across, and it didn’t murder children.

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 12: Seara had the right idea using an invoice

Seara’s approach seemed much more humane. Capture from the Blu Ray.

That’s a big plus in my book.

One of this show’s major themes revolves around that very topic. Raid, Klein, Blaze, and others represent the Russian leadership’s view of the world. Raul, Fino, Seara, and others represent the more advanced, more mature, and more humane view. That’s what made this my favorite moment.

Delivery: Fino, Saved by the Customer Order

With Airi and Lamdimia Do Aximemor guarding the passage, Raul was able to catch up with Fino. The bloodstone had possessed her, and she didn’t recognize Raul. He tried the routine stuff like asking her to wake up, but no go. So he switched tactics. He used a very specific kind of magic chant before bringing forth a powerful talisman.

In other words, he repeated to her all the phrases he had taught her. “You have to smile when you’re greeting customers,” he told her as he dodged her attacks (11:35). Leaping into the air to strike with his sword, he said (12:10), “I beg your pardon!” Each line of that magic chant seemed to eat away at her possession.

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 12: Raul had to fight to get Fino to listen

Raul didn’t have an easy time of it. Fino was no push over! Capture from the Blu Ray.

Seeing the basic tools of retail customer service used that way felt so right within the context of this show. But Raul had saved the most power attack for last. Raul had kept the paperwork for Fino’s first customer order. He whipped it out and shoved it in her face (15:12).

I apologize if my perseveration about economic issues in these reviews came across as boring. I kept them here because that’s how I really see this series. My thought process went like this: I figured I’d rather risk boring you than lying to you, which is what I’d be doing if I pretended any other moments were my favorites. Or worse, that the reason for them being my favorite was other than what it really was.

So thanks for sticking with these reviews. I don’t get a lot of chance to talk about this, so I appreciate it!

What did you think of Lamdimia Do Aximemor taking a leadership role early on? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
