I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 4 – Quick Summary

In I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 4, “The Daughter of the Demon Lord will be Working at the Convenience Store,” Fino Bloodstone continued to struggle to master the art of customer service. Not surprisingly, a customer did not want to buy a tape player the color of “fresh brain matter!” Raul Chaser seemed poised to declare Fino unteachable when disaster struck the Lawsons next door. They were short-staffed! Seara August, Reon’s manager, decided to help out by loaning Fino to them. Will the Lawsons still be standing at the end of the day?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Favorite Quote from I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 4

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 4: There's no faulting Fino's enthusiasm!

I could have sworn this happened in Raul’s imagination! Capture from the Blu Ray.

My favorite quote from this episode doubled as the punch-line to a perspective-shift. Seara had just loaned Fino to Lawsons. That left Raul and Nova alone in Reon. Raul, it seems, was very, very worried about Fino. He fretted that she hadn’t finished her training. The “fresh brain matter” comment still top of mind, he remembered the reaction Fino had provoked from their customers.

The scene switched to an over-the-top Fino talking about spaghetti with “blood-red magma.” The Lawsons customer regarded the plate of food with obvious trepidation.

Fino held the plate out to him, and with one of her maniacal grins, said (06:15), “Go ahead! Satisfy your hunger!”

I was just thinking, “Wow. Raul’s imagination is spot on” when Elsa came up behind Fino, clamped a hand over her mouth, laughed apologetically, excused herself, and pulled Fino behind the counter.

I like it when a show plays with my perceptions!

Best in Show Moment for I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 4

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 4: Fino seemed proud to show off new skills to Raul

Fino was quietly proud of herself – and Raul was astonished. But he should not have been! Capture from the Blu Ray.

Setup: Raul’s Character Development is Cool

Raul’s a good guy. He’s really trying to train Fino in the fine arts of customer service. But you know what? He’s not a great teacher. In fact, I’d go so far as to say he’s a poor teacher. And that’s cool! After all, it gives us the potential for all sorts of dramatic and comedic developments.

My favorite moment combines both the comedic and dramatic, and it’s all Elsa’s fault. When Fino had given us my favorite quote of the episode, Elsa pulled her aside and tried to put things in a way that Fino could understand. As they hid behind the counter, Elsa said that while she understood Fino loved horror movies (an apt euphemism!) and said (07:16), “We might get in trouble if we talk about it on the job.”

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 4: Elsa figured out how to put things in terms Fino could understand

Elsa found a way to put things in terms Fino could easily grasp. Capture from the Blu Ray.

Fino understood that right away! She said she’d keep their “noble interests” just between them. But that gave Fino a way of looking at things. Even better, Elsa’s help boosted both Fino’s trust and confidence.

Lamdimia Do Aximemor got into the act. She noticed Fino flinched before she started the microwave. So, she shared a trick she had learned: she told Fino to take a deep, centering breath before touching the button. Fino did, and the microwave didn’t blow up or sprout witches’ arms.

Delivery: So Is Fino’s

My favorite part was when Raul visited around lunch time, ostensibly to buy food but really to check on Fino. He saw her competently helping bag purchases and he seemed taken aback. When his turn came to pay, she asked if he wanted his chicken pilaf heated. He said he did, so she took it to the microwave, took her deep, centering breath, and reached for the button.

The dude flinched. Actually, he did more than that. He ducked and squeezed his eyes shut. When he heard not an explosion but the microwave humming to life, he expressed his shock. Fino just grinned at him (12:40).

I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job Episode 4: Fino was more than a little proud of herself

Fino was seriously pleased with herself. And with good reason! Capture from the Blu Ray.

Raul’s a good guy. And in this scene, he ran up against one of his limitations. It’s to his credit that he didn’t get all pissed off or mopey about it. In fact, later, he praised Fino for how well she’s doing. I liked how he handled this moment, and I liked how much Fino improved with Elsa and Lamdimia Do Aximemor’s help.

What did you think of how loyal Fino feels to Reon? What were your favorite moments in this episode? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

  1. I haven’t tried this anime yet, the title put me off a bit, but it certainly sounds fun! I should definitely check this out! I totally sympathize with the characters, customer service skills are hard to master!

    1. I’ve only tried to work customer service jobs a couple of times, but man, they were the among the hardest jobs I’ve had. The way the show portrays them feels real — I suspect the writers have personal experience!

I still don’t know how the folks who work at fast food places like Taco Bell take orders, take my payment, and give me food. All the while worried about the next rude customer! That’s got to be tough.

Please let me know what you think!
