Infinite Stratos Season 1 Episode 5 – Quick Summary
In Infinite Stratos Season 1 episode 5, “Boy Meets Boy,” the IS academy finally decided that Ichika and Houki really shouldn’t room together, and they moved Houki out. But Ichika wasn’t alone for long. A new transfer student, the second male capable of flying an IS, joined the school! The son of the CEO for a large IS company is France, he seemed anxious and nervous around Ichika. Why did he transfer so late in the year? What’s he really up to? Who’s lunch will Ichika prefer? And will he survive making the choice?

At first, I wondered why Dan didn’t try to explain it to Ichika. Then I realized that wouldn’t have done any good! Capture from the Blu Ray.
Ichika had some time off, so he visited his friend Dan Gotanda. Dan thought it sounded like Ichika lived in paradise, since women surrounded him all day. Ichika tried to explain it wasn’t like that at all. Dan was not convinced.
Dan’s sister Ran, dressed in typical casual “hang out with my brother at home” clothes, kicked in the door to announce dinner was ready. She was shocked to see Ichika – shocked and embarrassed. I got the feeling she would explain the need to warn her about such things to her brother after Ichika left. But she retained enough poise to invite Ichika to have lunch with them.
Shockingly, Ichika noticed that she changed into a pretty dress for lunch. But before I could get my hopes up that maybe Ichika was becoming more aware of the women around him, he asked if she were going on a date. Understandably, Ran was upset that Ichika didn’t realize she had dressed up to impress him.
Offering proof that even within this world, Ichika’s denseness was noticeable, Dan said (03:23), “I’ll bet you act exactly like that at school, too, right?”
“Huh? What are you talking about?” Ichika asked.
“Just forget about it. I feel sorry for Rin.”
I kind of feel sorry for Rin, too!

Setup: More Fun with Sub vs. Dub
Before we get started, I thought you might like to see a few more example of why I prefer the dub to the sub for this series:
- 03:42: Maya Yamada told Houki it was time to move out. Houki’s response:
- Sub: “W..Wait a minute! Do I have to do that right away?”
- Dub: “Now, wait just a darned minute. Are you saying that I have to pack and move out right away?”
I think that the dub better caught Houki’s feelings in that moment. Capture from the Blu Ray.
- 12:19:Chifuyu announcing it was time for the demonstration fight between Maya and Cecilia and Rin:
- Sub: “Now, begin!”
- Dub: “Let the carnage begin!”
- 16:03: Maya, announcing that Ichika should use his IS to help Houki get into the cockpit for an IS a student had forgotten to park it:
- Sub: “He’s going to carry you to the cockpit, of course.”
- Dub: “He’s gonna pick you up in his arms, of course! And then shove you on that big thing!”
In the last case, I think the dub more matched the shock and scandalized outrage some of the other students showed.
Delivery: Pride Goeth and Stuff
In my favorite moment, Cecilia and Rin learned a valuable lesson: don’t underestimate your teacher because she’s a kind, gentle sort. Chifuyu had picked Cecilia and Rin for an exercise. Maya came flying in and crashed, apparently out of control. In retrospect, I suspect she did that to encourage Cecilia and Rin to underestimate her.
Of course, when she crashed, she ran right into Ichika. Of course, somehow, one of her breasts ended up under one of his hands. But did you notice something? He didn’t squeeze! He gets at least some points for showing restraint. And yes, I will not argue if you say my standards in this regard are far too low.
Maya didn’t object as strongly as I thought she would. In fact, she seemed in favor of the idea of Chifuyu becoming her sister in law. Capture from the Blu Ray.
Then the exhibition fight started. Chifuyu in the dub was right. It was carnage. Cecilia and Rin, confident they could use their personal IS units to overpower a single teacher in a mass-produced IS, showed more arrogance than coordination. Maya instantly took advantage of that. She used her shots to get them to crash into each other. Then she used a rocket-powered grenade to slam them into the dirt.
Chifuyu calmly watched them crater (13:27).
I almost felt sorry for them. Actually, I didn’t. But it seemed like a nice thing to say.
