Germania Tries Again

Germania launches the Drachenfels, their latest aircraft carrier. Alarmed, the allies meeting in Britannia are at a loss on how to proceed, given Germania’s other troop movements. As the conversation stalls, Earl Redford, who’s hosting the meeting, introduces a surprise guest: The Archduchess Finé. She, in turn, introduces Izetta by showcasing the witch’s ability to fly and manipulate objects in the room. Knowing that the allies could not commit troops without some dramatic act, she offers to order Izetta to sink the Germanian aircraft carrier. After the meeting, Redford introduces Finé and Izetta to Groman, the Britannian officer who will fly with them to attack the ship.

Before they go to sleep, Finé shares that she knows she’s asking a lot of Izetta. As usual, Izetta tries to put her at ease by reaffirming her decision to do whatever she can for the Archduchess.

A Tempting Trap for Izetta

Two long-range bombers carrying torpedoes strapped to their bellies escort Izetta to the point where she’s to launch her attack. Enchanting four torpedoes, Izetta gestures for the bomber crew to release them. The weapons follow Izetta as she heads for the target. She’s dismayed when she finds that the ship isn’t in dock where it’s supposed to be. As she searches for it, Germanian ship-based anti-aircraft guns and aircraft try to shoot her down. The recently-recruited Captain Basler pilots one of the planes.

Basler’s still smarting from his defeat at Izetta’s hands in the second episode, and her pursues her with gusto. The witch is astonished at the speed of the new aircraft. She’s even more surprised when she hits areas in which her power drops to almost nothing. Watching from a hillside, Rickert and Belkman notice these moments. Groman’s bombers receive information that Izetta’s in trouble, and they head for the combat area. Izetta manages to hit the aircraft carrier with one torpedo, which damages an aircraft lift elevator. Basler almost catches her when the bombers arrive and offer cover fire. She’s able to guide her last torpedo into the carrier’s fuel tanks. Belkman calls off the attack because he has the information he needs. Damaged, the bombers head back home.

A Tactical Loss for a Strategic Gain

Belkman confides in Rickert: as power as the new aircraft carrier was, it was no match for Britannia’s navy. He was able to use that fact to convince the emperor to let him use the aircraft carrier as bait. The effort paid off: Belkman now has a better understanding of Izetta’s reliance on ley lines. Worse, he has what looks like another witch in his lab. Before he can execute his plans using that other witch, he wants to know one more thing: what’s in that castle in Eylstadt. The castle with the White Witch’s room. Rickert volunteers to go on that mission.

Finé Shows She is Shrewd

Finé choose a great way to introduce Izetta to a cynical and doubting crowd. Nothing less would have convinced them that Izetta was legitimate. Even then, it appeared not all of them were convinced that Izetta alone could change the course of the war. It took Finé’s quick-thinking again to counter that Izetta was like a rapier, and if leveraged correctly, could be effective. She gave the example of the two military victories Izetta had already earned.

Redford still felt bad about Finé being kidnapped right in front of him from the first episode. That was one of the reasons he wanted to help her with the introduction. Nice to see that even in this parallel world, there’s a sense of decency!

Finé and Izetta Support One Another

Because she was alone with Finé in their bedroom, Izetta was terribly nervous. It was so endearing! So, to calm her down, Finé decided to tickle her! Hearing them laugh together was a real contrast to what they’ve been going through. Afterward, as they’re holding hands, Finé once again says she’s unhappy at having to put so much on Izetta. Izetta again tells her she’s happy to do anything for Finé. They really have great chemistry. It’s really pleasant to see them draw strength from each other.

Rickert tries to bluff during a game of cards on the aircraft carrier, but not a single crewman or officer was fooled. Even though he’s a clandestine agent, he still has a lot to learn.

Groman tried to put Izetta at ease as they rode in the bomber. Little gestures of humanity like that emphasize who the good-guys are.

Interesting Battles

Have to admit it was really cool seeing the torpedoes following Izetta around. She talks to them like they’re creatures with a will who willingly decide to fight beside her. It both enhances the mystery of her powers and emphasizes her humility.

The Germanians show once again that their strategies and tactics are superior. They were willing to use the aircraft carrier — a strategic asset! — as bait. Eylstadt’s in trouble if they can’t counter that ability.

The battle was exciting to watch. The physics felt real; the character details like Basler’s wounded pride and Izetta’s innate honesty made a difference in how the battle played out. Also, Izetta had a tough time keeping ahead of Basler’s new plane. She had an even tougher time dealing with the variations in the area’s ley lines. She was lucky to achieve as much as she did.

This might have been the most evenly presented episode in the series. I don’t have anything to complain about! Maybe I’m getting too soft in my old age…

Thoughts about Izetta: The Last Witch Episode 7

The difference in the quality of the military strategy is starting to take a toll on Finé and her potential allies. The aircraft carrier was too tempting a target, so even if they still decided to go after it, they should have taken steps to guard against a trap. And I still think they’re leaving Izetta too explosed. When that torpedo blew up behind her, it left her scraped and bruised. The shrapnel could have killed her! She’s got to start wearing at least a flak jacket, and preferably the kind of combat attire the Imperial Guard used back in episode 5.

Still, if they keep reacting to Germanian strategy instead of taking the initiative, this war can’t end well for them.

Belkman has another witch in his lab? Is it really a witch — or someone whose abilities he manufactured? That’s a potentially devastating development for our heroes. If Germania can add magical capabilities to its strategic and technological dominance, they’ll be invincible, at least for a time.

But isn’t this show called Izetta, the last witch?
