Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 01 – Quick Summary

In Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 episode 01, “Burn Bright, Mad Dog,” Eris loved Rudeus so much that she could only stand beside him if she made herself worthy. So she dedicated herself to just that. With Ghislaine’s help, she sought training from Gull Farion, a Sword God. But Eris’s abrasive style sets the other students against her. And her goal – to defeat Orsted. Does the Sword God have anything to teach her? Will the other students let her learn?

Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 01: Gull Farion had a thick skin

A weaker or less disciplined man would have taken insult. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I didn’t quite know how to take Gull Farion. He’d been Ghislaine’s teacher, and we know how she turned out, so he had that going for him. But honestly, when Eris said, “I haven’t got time for small fry like you!” (04:13), I had misgivings.

And as an aside: did you see Ghislaine’s tail go straight in response to Eris’s words?

I mean, a lesser man would have taken insult and killed her outright. His students, from the youngest to the eldest, would absolutely have supported him. And thinking about it, that’s what made him so dangerous in that moment: only his character restrained his hand.

How would he handle Eris’s disrespect?

Well, he recognized the look in her eyes and asked who she was out to kill. When she said the Dragon God Orsted,

After a moment, Gull Farion burst out laughing. “I see,” he said, slapping his knee (04:10). “You’re right. Compared to Orsted, I am small fry!”

It was at that moment I realized we were dealing with an honest man with the kind of self control I’d expect from a Sword God.

Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 01: Eris found her true motivation

Eris found her real motivation. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Welcome Back, Jobless Reincarnation!

I’ve missed this show. I’ve missed how the characters in this show grab my attention and freaking refuse to let go. And I’ve missed how effectively it sets up and delivers its emotional beats. Starting with a flashback to Eris leaving Rudy? Stressing the tragic nature of their parting, knowing he would completely misinterpret her rationale, based on his own brokenness? Perfection.

Seriously, there are few stories that capture human moments with that kind of authenticity.

And that scene perfectly set the stage for my favorite moment.

Eris handily beat the first poor student they sent against her. Poor little dude stood no chance. She even beat – literally – the Sword god’s daughter, Nina, who wielded a steel sword hidden within a wooden facade.

Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 01: Nina was about to learn an important life lesson

I almost felt sorry for her. But she did accept a sword she knew to be unfair. Well, unfair to alost anyone else… Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Eris clearly had skills. Yet, she couldn’t progress. Her focus was undeniable. She wanted to beat Orsted. She wanted to get stronger and faster. Yet, something held her back. Despite how clearly she visualized her enemy, she couldn’t get faster.

It was heart-wrenching to see her lament (11:29), “Ghislaine is faster. Ruijerd is faster. The Sword God is faster. And Orsted is way faster than this! Way faster…”

She compared herself to the greatest powers on the planet, and she found herself lacking.

Delivery: True Love is True

That’s when Gull Farion invited Auber Corvette, an emperor of the North God Style. Gull Farion knew he had nothing to offer Eris, so he called on someone with more underhanded techniques. Orsted would use them; Eris had to be ready for them.

Eris even attacked Auber Corvette when he wouldn’t move after a long day’s practice. She held her own against him with real blades. So when it came time for her to face off against him for practice, in front of the whole school, I wondered how it would go.

She didn’t hesitate. Eris rarely does. She stayed right with him, sweeping kicks and all. Even when he winded her by drawing a third sword, she did not back down.

“I… I need to get stronger,” she gasped, trying to catch her breath (20:45). “Strong enough to be sure I can stand level with Rudeus.”

“And who is Rudeus?” Auber Corvette asked. I like to think he saw a teaching moment; at the very least, he seemed genuinely curious.

Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 01: Eris achieved Light Blade

Cool use of color – Eris achieved a spectral red shift! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

“I’m the sword fighter,” she answered, gathering for another strike (20:54). “Rudeus is the mage. Rudeus is… amazing!”

With that, she launched her attack – and owned the Light Blade attack.

A desire to kill Orsted wasn’t her true motivation. It was only related to it. Her real motivation was to stand beside the man she loved. I mean, come on. How cool is that?
