Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 06 – Quick Summary

In Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 episode 06, “Another Domestic Disaster?,” Rudy, Roxy, and Sylphie accepted a job guarding a princess on a pilgrimage. It was supposed to be a routine job. But a figure from Rudy’s past had also been hired – and their past guaranteed a complicated reunion. Who was this person? How will Roxy and Sylphie react? Will Rudy’s life ever be the same?

Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 06: Rudy has come a long way since season 1

Rudy’s come a long way since season 1, episode 1. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I like redemption stories. The reason I like them is that they’re universal. All of us – and yes, I mean me, too – is imperfect. Seeing someone start where Rudy started and end up where he is now is inspirational.

How far has Rudy come? My favorite quote in this episode shows us. Rudy was playing with Lucie when Suzanne, Lucie’s web nurse, said he could turn the little girl over. Why? Because for some reason, Suzanne thought it was unusual for Rudy to show such an interest in his daughter.

Rudy replied that he couldn’t understand why any man wouldn’t want to dote on his daughter. Suzanne, as she continued her needle work, casually mentioned that her husband sure showed no such interest.

“Maybe Timothy needs to think more about fatherhood,” Rudy said (00:38).

Can you imagine the Rudy from season one even thinking such a thing, much less mentioning it? And now, looking back across what came before, we can see exactly how Rudy grew and matured into someone for whom saying that was completely natural.

That’s why I like redemption stories. They show there’s hope for all of us. Even for those of us who don’t think we need it.

Favorite Moment from Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 06

Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 06: Sylphie is the beating heart of the family

Sylphie is the glue that holds the family together. But she’s not alone! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Tying Up Loose Ends?

I’d forgotten all about Suzanne and Sara. In fact, when we first met Suzanne in this episode, I admit I had to go look her up on My Anime List. As soon as I saw Sara’s picture, a whole flood of memories came back – including Soldat having to prevent Rudy from committing suicide (by plunging a knife into his own throat – yikes!).

Gotta say – Soldat has amazing reflexes.

Seeing how Sara and Rudy achieved closure nearly earned my favorite moment in this episode. So did Eris achieving the title of Sword King, even when the title didn’t particularly interest her. She was, after all, after the power to defend Rudy. Whether she had a title or not meant absolutely nothing to her.

She doesn’t need any titles. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

And by the way, Nina gets points for being able to even touch Eris. She’s come a long way. It’s just her tough luck to go up against Eris and her goals.

Those were close to being my favorite moment. But I’m going to choose another moment, and it won’t be for the obvious reasons.

After the princess protection job ended, Rudy walked back home with Sylphie and Roxy. Both wanted reassurance. After all, though they both supported Rudy when he had to work for closure with Sara, it had to be tough on them. I mean, this is Rudy. It’s easy for him to be in control when he’s at home. But in the field? When he has alone time with an old flame?

Delivery: Sylphie’s Generosity and Rudy’s Restraint

I liked how the show acknowledged that. I also like how Rudy picked up on their insecurity (even though they had to spell it out for him!) and tried to reassure them that no, he wouldn’t just come home one day with a new wife candidate.

“Thanks,” Sylphie said (19:36). “But you know, Rudy… if someone is special to you, and they feel you’re special, too, I wouldn’t have a problem with two or three people like that.” Though she did go on to make it clear he’d best not bring home a wife candidate who was pregnant. Even the goddess Sylphie has limits.

Now, you may think, “Yeah, you’re a dude, so of course you’d pick a male wish fulfillment moment like that.” And candidly, I’m not denying it. But that’s not why it’s my favorite moment. It’s my favorite because of Rudy’s reaction.

Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 06: Rudy didn't take Sylphie's words as license

The lack of any pervy smile makes this scene work. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

He didn’t gleefully accept the challenge. He didn’t take it as permission. He’s not the same Rudy that he was back in season one, or back on Earth. He’s a reasonably mature, pretty much well-adjusted father and husband, and he thinks about keeping his family intact.

And we’re back now to the idea that I enjoy redemption arcs.

Also, the world needs more Sylphies. She’s border-line too good for that world. In fact, it worries me a little bit. Or it would, if she wasn’t in a family whose population included at least two strategic weapons.

What did you think of Rudy’s reconciliation scene with Sara? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to share in the comments!

  1. It was a good episode, but oh boy was it awkward to watch.

I’m also glad that people started to appreciate Sylphie more. It’s very easy to dismiss her in the books, since she’s just kinda there. I myself only understood how she is the glue that holds everything together while rereading the series. Anime does a damn good job at propping her up.
