In Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 episode 07, “Phase Four,” it’s graduation time for Pursena Adoldia and Lineana Dedoldia. That should have been occasion for celebration, and it was. But it was also a precursor to a duel. They had been too successful in previous years. Now, having defeated all the males who had challenged them, they had to face each other. Which one would become chieftain, and which the free agent? Why did they ask Rudy and his friends to witness the event? And why did Nanahoshi put on a ring during their fight?

The theme of this season to date has been the effects of maturity on Rudy and the people around him. The latter stood out in this episode. Before Rudy’s arrival, the students in the special class had all been at each other’s throats. But now?
During Pursena and Lineana’s graduation, previous enemies Cliff and Zanoba weren’t standoffish at all. In fact, they seemed positively supportive. So much so that Rudy called them out about it.
“To be honest,” Cliff said (02:14), “they’re so crude, I’ve never had much to do with them, but as a special student myself, I consider them comrades in learning. So, I wanted to give them a proper send off.”
A series like Jobless Reincarnation is uniquely positioned to point out this fundamental fact of humanity: namely, that empathy isn’t a weakness. It’s a super power. It’s a bonding agent that enables community. And it’s in community that humans can achieve greatness.
It’s not that I’m against the lone wolf/hero trope. It’s that I recognize it as a fantasy; or as the tip of a spear whose blade and shaft are made up of contributors that the hero really needs to acknowledge.
You know, with that attitude, it’s no wonder I’m having a hard time finding the right audience for my novels!

Setup: Success at a Community Level
This episode went out of its way to tie up loose ends for several of the characters – and all in the spirit of achievement enabled by the community Rudy had helped build. You had Nanahoshi achieving Phase 3 of her plan. You had the two beast girls graduating. We got to see Norn put in the work to earn a role on the student council. We even got to see Roxy earn a seat in Rudy’s lap.
Okay, that last one definitely doesn’t represent that kind of commitment that Norn showed, but it’s an achievement nonetheless. Just think of where Roxy came from; think of how her own people treated her. But with Rudy, she found more than acceptance. She found love and purpose.

We saw earlier that Cliff had learned empathy. He learned it, at least in part, from Rudy. Who else has experienced in such a visceral way the need for empathy? No one showed anything like it to him while he was on Earth. He knew how it felt to be without. In effect, Rudy’s an expert on why empathy’s a good thing.
Delivery: Rudy Has Become a Leader
In this episode, he summed it up nicely by saying (18:51), “But I think all of us have a duty to cheer them on. I wouldn’t be who I am now if the people in my life hadn’t supported me. So, I’ll always be ready to support them, too.”
Can you imagine the Rudy of season 1 saying that? He’s come a long way, and it’s been great to watch. This is exactly why I like redemption arcs: we all have flaws, and knowing that even someone like Rudy can overcome them is inspirational.
What, I’m saying Jobless Reincarnation is inspirational? Yeah, I am. Because it speaks to where all of us are, if we’re honest enough to admit it.

And now, in effect, a new story starts. Rudy and his community are plunging forward into new territory, and given how much he has to lose, I’m really nervous on his behalf! Which means the characters and story and world are working as designed.
