Log Horizon: Destruction of the Round Table Episode 9 Review – Quick Summary

In Log Horizon: Destruction of the Round Table Episode 9, “Adoration,” Shiroe works with adventurers like Isaac to watch for the Genius Erenius as it approaches Akiba. The adventurers are confident they can take care of Erenius, since the Mofur sisters Litka and Lelia reported it was only level 65. Shiroe, however, remained concerned. At the same time, there was another battle brewing. At Isuzu’s urging, Minori tried to get Shiroe to go on a date. Akatsuki even seemed fine with the idea. Are things going Minori’s way? Or is Rudy right that Isuzu should stop encouraging Minori? Finally, Tetora takes a squad out for field training. She’s very enthusiastic — maybe too enthusiastic. How many hill giants are too many?

Favorite Quote from Log Horizon: Destruction of the Round Table Episode 9

Based on Takayama’s expression, I think the lecture she intends for Krusty is going to be anything but jovial. Capture from the Funimation stream.

In a room labeled, “Headquarters for Operation Rescue and Retrieve Krusty, the Former Rep of the Round Table conference, Who is Fighting Alone on the Eured Continent,” Lenessia, Elissa, Rieze, and Misa Takayama worked hard to plan Krusty’s retrieval mission. They made considerable progress until one of them raised the topic of exactly where on the continent they could find Krusty.

Rieze and Takayama, who had worked with Krusty within the guild, lamented that wherever he was, he was likely “pointlessly being friendly to simplehearted town girls and cute small animals.” They both appeared exasperated, and Rieze mentioned she planned to remain behind. That surprised Lenessia. She had expected Rieze not only go with them, but to help guard Lenessia herself. Lenessia asked that if Rieze didn’t guard her, who would?

Takayama answered (10:28), “I’ll do that as well as lecture millord.”

She looked serious! I think Krusty is in for quite the stern talking to!

Best in Show Moment for Log Horizon: Destruction of the Round Table Episode 9

Minori was overjoyed that Shiroe offered to teach her how to shop for a raid. I felt sorry that she so misinterpreted his intentions. Isuzu didn’t help matters! Capture from the Funimation stream.

Setup: Building on Akatsuki and Shiroe in the Previous Episode

Remember in the previous episode how Akatsuki and Shiroe came to a new understanding of themselves and their relationship? That’s a grandiose way of saying that Akatsuki took a risk and just acted like herself when she and Shiroe went shopping. Shiroe took her suggestion to get something to eat, and they ended up on top of a building with a great view of the city. Akatsuki took comfort in knowing that Shiroe’s past was just that — past. Shiroe realized he was really comfortable with Akatsuki, even in conversational lulls.

For Akatsuki, that means she realized she could relax with Shiroe. She didn’t need to compete with Kanami. She didn’t need to fear the shadow of anyone from Shiroe’s past. In that moment, he was there, with her, and there was no where else she would rather be.

This was Akatsuki’s reaction when she learned Minori was going shopping with Shiroe. She was happy for her friend — and she knew she had nothing to worry about. Capture from the Funimation stream.

I recognized Shiroe’s perspective. He didn’t realize the implications with what he had come to understand. He was so comfortable with Akatsuki, simply because she was Akatsuki. Yes, they’d been through a lot together, and that set the context. But he was comfortable with her because he knew he could be. Her affection and their mutual trust made that possible.

That’s a long way of saying that there are at a stage of their relationship where they trust each other without even thinking about it. Put one way, even though Shiroe doesn’t know it, they’re exploring what it would mean to become a couple. Put another way, Akatsuki isn’t competing with anyone. Not from Shiroe’s past, and not from Shiroe’s present. That’s because she doesn’t have to.

Unfortunately, not everyone understands that.

Delivery: Same Room, Different Stories

You might remember that Minori has a huge crush on Shiroe. She’s had that crush since he orchestrated her rescue from the Guild that had captured and forced a lot of kids into child labor. So when Isuzu tried to convince her to put herself out there, she readily agreed. She even let Isuzu pick out her outfit so she looked her best. When she arrived in front of Shiroe to give him a cup of tea, she managed to make him feel guilty for neglecting raid training fro her and her team. So, he agreed to take them on a training trip that summer.

Her enthusiasm overwhelmed him. So much that he started stammering. That’s important — how much did he stammer with Akatsuki?

Minori’s reaction took Shiroe by surprise. Capture from the Funimation stream.

She felt elated, but she realized that was a team-based event. She wanted one on one time with Shiroe. So, she asked him if he’d teach her to go shopping for raiding supplies. Saying she was really zealous, he agreed.

“Let’s find a time to do it soon,” he said (07:29). She was so excited she could barely reply.

The problem here is that both of them were in different conversations. He was a teacher who felt guilty for neglecting his students. She was a young woman in love who interpreted everything Shiroe said in that light. Shiroe doesn’t think of her at all as a romantic interest. Minori might think she’s competing with Akatsuki, but there’re not on same chess board. This scene was my favorite from the episode because of how well it blended their two perspectives and left me with a bittersweet feeling.
