Lycoris Recoil Episode 7 – Quick Summary

In Lycoris Recoil episode 7, “Time will tell,” Chisato accidentally saw the subject of a text on Mika’s phone. It said Mika should meet someone at a mysterious bar to talk about Chisato’s future. There was no way Chisato could ignore that. Nor was there any way she could keep it a secret. So she roped in Takina, Kurumi, and Mizuki. They discussed the matter and decided that LycoReco itself hung in the balance. Can Kurumi’s computer skills get into the member’s only bar? Can Takina pretend to be Chisato’s bodyguard? And can Chisato pull off the role of a sophisticated, rich, mysterious bar patron? And just who is Mika meeting?

Lycoris Recoil Episode 7: Kurumi judged Mizuki

Kurumi seems more than a little judgemental here. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

The banter in this show is a delight. It flows naturally from the characters and circumstances. Early in this episode, Chisato had walked outside to spend most of the day ruminating on the subject of the text she had seen on Mika’s phone. She came back in around closing time to find everyone winding down.

Mizuki was especially unwinding, because she had just thrown back what looked like a full glass of saki. She let out a satisfied and throaty sigh.

Takina, counting change at the register, ignored her. Chisato paid no attention either, because she was still deep in thought.

Kurumi, however, looked over at Mizuki and said (04:20), “Have your evening drink at home.” She had a pretty judgemental vibe going on.

Mizuki just ignored her. The show seems to want us to think that Mizuki has a problem with alcohol. And maybe she does. But so far, it just seems she likes the stuff! Nothing wrong with a little drink after work. Unless that whole bottle is her start for the evening. In which case I’ll reconsider my position.

Lycoris Recoil Episode 7: Takina is wise to the ways of Shinji

This is Takina’s “You Just Lied to Me! I’ll remember that!” face. Shinji better be careful. She’s a good shot. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Chisato’s Taste in Clothes

Can we take a moment to appreciate how well Chisato dresses up? With a hat and everything! Plus she had the sense to bring Takina along as her bodyguard. Elegant, graceful, and smart. Gracious, too. Did you see how polite she was to Shinji, even after he more or less crushed her dreams?

I could easily have chosen several moments from Chisato’s screen time as my favorite. I almost did. But there was another moment that stuck with me with a little more force. It was a moment that gave me both foreboding and hope. Not only that, it suggested that one of the characters has matured a little.

Lycoris Recoil Episode 7: Chisato rocks a red evening dress

This is a good look for Chisato. I wonder what happened to the hat, though. It seems to have disappeared soon after this shot. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Do you remember what happened when Shinji was leaving? Takina stopped him. She had no idea what had just happened. She had no idea he had just deflated Chisato. All she knew was what Chisato had hoped to achieve, and she had no reason to think it had not gone well. She’s met Shinji under an alias when he has visited LycoReco, and she seemed to have a positive impression of him.

She asked him to excuse her for the interruption. She apologized for interrupting earlier (by that, I think she meant interrupting the conversation he had been having with Mika). That said, she seemed to have a happy interpretation of that had happened.

Delivery: Takina, Becoming Wise

“…Chisato was happy,” Takina said (18:57). Smiling, she said, “… Chisato has been waiting for this…”

He wiped the smile off her face when he interrupted her to say that she had to know Chisato didn’t belong with her, presumably at LycoReco. There was a moment of silence before Shinji climbed into the car. Grinning, he said, “I have high hopes for, Takina.”

The Takina at the beginning of the series would have craved praise from someone in a position of apparent authority. She also would have trusted the intentions of those people. But now? Did you see the expression on her face as she watched the car pull away?

Lycoris Recoil Episode 7: Shinji may have just tried to fool the wrong person

He may have just tried to fool the wrong person. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

She knew he had somehow hurt Chisato. She couldn’t know how, but she knew something had gone wrong. Furthermore, she had figured out the guy had some agenda of his own that didn’t care about Chisato. And it didn’t care about her.

She knew it.

A lot came together in this episode. Chisato hanging up her Alan Institute pendant in her locker is just one visible sign of that. And of course we learned (and maybe some of you already figured out!) that Majima is also an Alan Institute prodigy, so the two of them clashing is even more probable now. But Chisato is not alone. She has someone like Takina beside her. And Takina’s thinking more and more often on her own. I’m looking forward to seeing what the two of them can do together!

What did you think of Chisato and Takina’s rather less than stealthy attempt to exit without Mika and Shinji seeing them? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to share them in the comments!
