Made in Abyss – The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 11 – Quick Summary

In Made in Abyss – The Golden City of the Scorching Sun episode 11, “Value,” Faputa seemed to have gotten the jump on Reg. Was she seriously going to bite off his head? And regardless, will she be able to fulfill her destiny of destroying the villagers now that the outside creatures are streaming into the village? And what will happen to Riko and Nanachi?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Made in Abyss - The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 11: Nanachi had a cool superhero line

Nanachi had a great superhero line! Even if all she did was guide Belaf’s attack… Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

Things looked dark for Riko and the few villagers trying to protect her. Faputa had just dropped an unconscious Reg in front of them. She was about to pounce. Even Gaburoon trying to deflect her attack didn’t stop her; it just slowed her down.

Then a blur out of nowhere slammed into Faputa and threw her away from the villagers. The next thing we know, Belaf and Nanachi were standing in the massive opening to the outside. Belaf was in some kind of battle mode: he was fast and he seemed ready to confront even Faputa.

Staring down at Faputa, Nanachi adopted her most condescending manner as she said (05:47), “Hey, Princess. Aren’t ya takin’ this tomboy thing too far?”

It’s nice to see Nanachi back in action.

Made in Abyss - The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 11: Faputa saw the world through new eyes.

Faputa’s eyes – one of them brand new! – saw the world differently after the villagers’ sacrifices. Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

Setup: Faputa Took Her Destiny to Its Limit

I had never seen weaponized memory! Yet, Made in Abyss just gave me an example. Belaf had kept most of his memories from the before-times. He was able, for example, to share recollections of Vuelo becoming Irumyuui’s mother – in essence, Faputa’s grandmother. That placed Faputa’s entire being into a new context.

Which rendered her combat-ineffective, at least for a time. It also set up my favorite moment.

The show has constructed a powerful mythology. Of course, we’re building on the original series and other related works. In this season, we followed the ancient exploits of Wazukyan, Vuelo, Belaf, and the others. We saw them as they originally were. Throughout this season, we’ve seen what they had become. The difference between the two gave us a concrete manifestation of allegory – literally, they had been shaped by their desires.

This mythology was so effective that a seemingly natural act took on mythological meaning.

Faputa had existed to destroy the village. Retribution for what they had done to her mother was her destiny. In this episode, monsters from the outside began pouring in. Those monsters began devouring those same villagers.

Made in Abyss - The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 11: The turbinid-dragon is back and he seems hungry

This is going to be a problem. Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

At first, Faputa treated those monsters as threats to her territory. Those villagers were her prey, she screamed at the invaders. She savagely attacked them, but their numbers overwhelmed her. When the turbinid-dragon’s attack threw her across the village and left her a crumpled heap of broken bones and torn flesh, she could only lay there.

She began to lose consciousness. Just before she did, she thought (18:58), “If nothing had been accomplished, there is no value… no value at all… in being immortal.” Faputa had passed into a dark night of the soul.

Delivery: Faputa’s Chance for a New Destiny

Faputa regained consciousness. Either a group of surviving villagers had come to her, or they had transported her to another location. Either way, one of them sliced off a piece of themself and fed it to her.

She chewed and swallowed.

Pretty gross, right? But this is a mythological act. It was more than a villager hacking off a limb and feeding it to Faputa. Faputa had intended to kill all of them for their crimes against her mother. Now, those same villagers willingly offered themselves up to heal her and bring her back to life.

Were they being selfless? Probably not. They wanted her to protect her from the invading monsters. But the act, in context of this story, showed them offering themselves to her, and her accepting that offering. And in doing so, she was healed.

Made in Abyss - The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 11: Faputa 2.0 looks even more powerful

Faputa 2.0 looks even more capable than her previous incarnation. I’m looking forward to seeing what she can do! Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

As their nourishment reknit her bones and regenerated her flesh, she realized she had never really known Gaburoon. She had never really known Reg. Even her own mother had been an unknown to her. Now, given new life, she could try to fashion a new destiny for herself.

“Beyond this duty, what lies in wait?” she wondered (21:58). “Will there really be… value there?”

The villagers’ self-sacrifice more than healed her. It was a conscious act that renewed her.

I’m still anxious for her safety. This is Made in Abyss, after all! But I’m hopeful she’ll have a less tragic role in the future.
