Made in Abyss – The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 2 Review – Quick Summary

In Made in Abyss – The Golden City of the Scorching Sun episode 2, “Capital of the Unreturned”, Riko, Reg, and Nanachi arrived on the sixth level. Their exploration almost ended when Riko plunged into a trap door. Only Reg’s fast thinking saved her. Between the three of them, they began to understand how the sixth level showed its dangers. That is, until an unseen danger visited during their sleep – despite their comprehensive precautions. What kind of being is stalking them? What did it take from them? And will they survive long enough to find out?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Made in Abyss - The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 2: The turbinid-dragon was terrifyingly dangerous -- like the rest of the Abyss

I think I’m with Nanachi on this one. Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

Made in Abyss shows us creatures whose beauty is only surpassed by their lethality. Take, for example, the creature that Riko, Reg, and Nanachi saw – from afar – as they moved deeper into the sixth level.

The turbinid-dragon looked like a cross between a Pegasus, a fire dragon, and a sculpture of aged ivory. Its tail wound in on itself. Its head, with its long, tapered nose, surveyed the surrounding landscape as if it didn’t have a care in the world. Given its size and apparent grace, I doubt it had to worry about many predators.

Though this is the Abyss, after all!

Reg asked if they could take it on. Reading from her notes, Riko said that one of those creatures were “as dangerous as a swarm of Amaranthine-Deceptors.”

“Nope, let’s pass on that,” Nanachi said wisely (04:51).

I like Nanachi’s common sense.

Made in Abyss - The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 2: Nanachi sometimes forgets Riko is a child

For just a moment, Riko was a sad little girl. But she recovered quickly. Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

I think that sometimes, Nanachi forgets that Riko is just a kid. Do you remember the scene about nine minutes in when they tried to cook what Riko thought were eggs? They boiled them, but the contents still writhed. Then they coated and fried them, and the contents still moved about. I’ll tell you this for free: there’s no way I’d pop those things into my mouth! But Riko and Reg are made of stronger stuff than I am. What I’m getting at is those weren’t the actions of a scared child, but a mature, calculating adult.

The taste reminded Riko of something. I should probably mention that all while this scene played out, I had visions of the original Alien movie – I half expected something to burst out of Riko, Reg, or even Nanachi as they ate! That aside, Riko finally remembered what it reminded her of: a meal she’d shared with her friends on Cave Raiding Memorial Day. For a moment, she became more animated than usual as she described her friends to Nanachi.

Made in Abyss - The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 2: Apparently, the twitchy bits were tasty

Nanachi remained suspicious of the food – right up until she tasted it! Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

Riko even drew pictures of her old friends in the dirt.

“I wonder if everyone’s doing all right,” she asked (09:40).

Nanachi answered before she thought, saying (09:43), “Even if you worry about ‘em, it’s not like you’ll ever get to see ‘em again.”

Instantly, Riko’s smile vanished. Nanachi saw the impact and recovered quickly. So did Riko. But that moment reminded me that yes, Riko is resourceful. She has survived things that would kill most people, even in her world. And yes, she’s dedicated to her mission. In spite of that, she’s still human, which means she’s susceptible to moments of weakness. That just makes her an even more sympathetic character.

What did you think of the beings that Riko, Reg, and Nanachi found at the end? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

  1. No Vueko this week, but I love the detail in the new opening where a young tree on a promontory her Ganja descends becomes a giant old tree when Riko & CO. descend from that same spot.

Please let me know what you think!
