Made in Abyss – The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 6 – Quick Summary

In Made in Abyss – The Golden City of the Scorching Sun episode 6, “The Luring,” Belaf forced a terrible choice on Riko: in order to save Nanachi, Riko had to give up her eyes, her legs, or half of her internal organs. Riko gazed down at Nanachi, who slumbered, nestled with the copy of Mitty. Riko tried to think of how she could exist without any of the things that Belaf wanted. What will she decide? How will Reg react? And would Nanachi say – if she ever regains consciousness?

Made in Abyss - The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 6: Vuelo has some good sense

Vuelo has some sound advice for Riko! Capture form the HIDIVE stream.

Vuelo has grown on me. So has her voice actor, Yuka Terasaki. The character’s not only massively sympathetic, she seems like despite whatever she’s been through, she’s still a decent human being. Within the Abyss, that’s nothing short of a treasure.

In this episode, the villagers had lured a creature from the outside. They did that because they could not leave the village, so to increase value, they had to bring in things from the outside. The problem was, the critter they lured in started running roughshod over them. And at one point, Riko freaked out: it was heading for the jeweler’s shop. And Prushka.

Riko took off at a dead run. They got to the jeweler in time. In fact, he had finished Prushka. He had finished with Prushka, too, but let’s not go into that. Riko looked on the form her white whistle had taken in amazement. Prushka, too, seemed well-pleased.

But outside, the stomping sounds grew steadily louder. The jeweler said something that Vuelo translated.

“’Take it and run,’” she said (06:17). Her voice quivering, she added, “I agree with them.”

Her wide-eyed terror went a long way towards selling the moment. And Yuka Terasaki’s work? It was splendid. I didn’t think, “What a great voice actor!” Instead, I thought, “Vuelo sounds terrified!” That’s about the highest praise I can give a voice actor.

Made in Abyss - The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 6: Riko could not believe her eyes

Riko could not believe her eyes. Capture form the HIDIVE stream.

Setup: The Abyss as a Clear and Present Danger

Seeing Riko figure out how to defend against the apparently successful luring reminded me of just how much like her mother, Lyza, she could be. The scene where she analyzed the creature the villagers had lured into the village drove home that comparison. Riko used her knowledge of the Abyss and her intelligence and drive to come up with a plan to save the villagers.

But this is the Abyss. Nothing’s simple; plans don’t work as intended.

They all thought they had brought the monster down. Yet, its tentacles reached out and grabbed several of the villages. The tentacles exuded acid. As it grasped the villagers, it also melted their skin. And one of the tentacles headed straight for Riko.

Maaa threw herself in front of Riko.

Made in Abyss - The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 6: I thought Maaa was dead for sure

This is Made in Abyss. I thought Maaa was a goner. Capture form the HIDIVE stream.

Now, this is Made in Abyss. That means I expect that at any time, any character might get ripped apart, shredded, diced, melted, exploded, or otherwise killed. Even though I’m pretty sure Riko and Reg will survive, I’m not sure they’ll survive with all of their parts intact. Reg’s already down an arm! So for all I knew, the tentacle would grab Riko and melt the skin off her legs or gouge out an eye so she couldn’t afford Nanachi. So I was surprised she avoided being grabbed.

I’m not sure I like how this show has made me think!

The key idea is that as the tentacle drew Maaa away, I thought Maaa was dead. That’s what made my favorite moment so amazing.

Delivery: The Power of Prushka

Prushka appeared to Riko and said, “Call… Call me.” It was one of those moments where you could physically feel all the plot threads wrap together and form a narrative tapestry. Riko pulled the white whistle to her lips, inhaled, and blew with all her might.

An instant later, something too fast to see slashed all the tentacles. Even as the villagers fell, something slammed into the ground. A cloud of dust billowed all around. As it cleared, Riko could not believe her eyes.

“Sorry I kept you waiting,” Reg said (16:44).

And guess what? It wasn’t just Reg. It was Prushka-Enhanced Reg! His armor had turned white. He felt that his speed had increased. He said that “You and Prushka called for me – I knew it immediately.” It was like Gandalf the White in slightly shorter form.

Made in Abyss - The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 6: Reg the White appears!

Reg was serious about doing Riko’s will. Capture form the HIDIVE stream.

I watch this show for moments like this. It felt exhilarating in a way that only a narrative that puts in the hard work of scaring me to death can deliver. Bright instants like this, in other words, are only possible against the contrast of the dark – and even the very mention of Prushka with all the darkness she had to endure would be enough for contrast. And it was only part of the weave that made up this scene.

And now, with the addition of a fully powered white whistle, Riko and Reg together are even more formidable. If they can only get out of this village with their hides intact…

What did you think of how the lured monster was actually a colony of monsters? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
