In Midnight occult civil servants episode 1, “Angels and Tengu Above the Shinjuku Skyline,” Arata Miyako is excited to start his new job, but his enthusiasm wanes slightly as he finds the door looks like it’s a broom closet. Being greeted by smoke from Seo Himezuka’s experiment gone wrong didn’t help. It also didn’t help that his other co-worker, Kyouichi Sakaki, kept talking about a “rite of passage.” Just what has Arata gotten himself into? Why are they working outside in the middle of the night? And what did Seo mean by “screaming and passing out?”

Later, one of the girls Arata and his co-workers had rescued from their first encounter with Kohaku awakened and told them something startling: that she had been abducted in the 1960s and hadn’t aged since. She also remembered fine-grained black sand from her captivity, and she could no longer sing — her abductor had stolen her singing voice. Kyouichi Sakaki confided that his sister had been abducted in a similar way. He begged Arata to help him talk to Kohaku. Will Arata let his co-worker talk to the trickster with amber eyes — after that very same co-worker had warned Arata never to attempt such a thing? And just what will Kohaku do about Arata’s friend who seemed to be taking time away from the god?
