Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun Episode 11 – Quick Summary
In Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun Episode 11, “Let’s Rice,” Umetarou Nozaki’s writing felt stale — to himself. Chiyo Sakura still loved his manga, but Umetarou wanted more shock value. He wanted more surprises! So he spent the next day springing such surprises on Chiyo. How well do you think that went? Later, a major rain storm trapped Masayuki Hori, Mikoto Mikoshiba, Hirotaka Wakamatsu at Umetarou’s house. Masayuki noticed that Umetarou secretly took notes about everything they said – with the intent to work their dialogue into a future manga! Will Hirotaka tell the others? Or will he give in to the inevitable?

We all have our go-to behaviors when we’re under stress. Capture from the Blu Ray.
I feel a little sorry for Ken Miyamae. He seems like a sensible, non-nonsense man who has embraced editing as a profession. Which means there’s a good chance he’s worked with his fair share of eccentric writers. Writers are, after all, a skittish bunch. One second, we’re the most arrogant people on the face of the planet. In the next, we’re convinced our suck factor is astronomical.
Or maybe that’s me. It’s hard for me to tell sometimes.
Chiyo asked Umetarou to talk about the first time he had met Ken. The entire sequence was bizarre in a way the perfectly fit Umetarou’s character. For example, they met on the street, but Umetarou called him on the phone from about thirty meters away. He said if Ken came any closer, he’d leave.
Umetarou and Ken went to a restaurant to wait for Umetarou’s then current editor, Mitsuya Maeno. Ken didn’t seem surprised that Mitsuya was late, but as time dragged on, he asked Umetarou if he wanted something to eat.
“I wouldn’t want you to think we’re friends by just having a meal together,” Umetarou answered (01:48) in an example of tsundere that would have impressed Taiga Aisaka.
I guess that’s just how Umetarou acts when he’s outside of his comfort zone!

Chiyo’s hopes didn’t get dashed for once! Capture from the Blu Ray.
Setup: Umetarou’s Quest to Write Better Manga
This story started with Chiyo’s attempted (and botched) confession to Umetarou back in episode 1. From her perspective, Chiyo has felt her hopes rise only to be dashed dozens of times. Today, Umetarou turned the tables on her. Unintentionally, maybe, but it was such a huge change that it shocked Chiyo. And earned my award for favorite moment of the episode.
Umetarou wanted to inject some excitement into his manga. So, he told Chiyo that he would try to surprise her at various times during the day. She arrived at school with feelings of apprehension. And on her guard.
Chiyo had no idea what to expect at school. Capture from the Blu Ray
Umetarou’s first surprise was taking the place of Chiyo’s chair. I guess she hadn’t had her morning coffee, because she didn’t even notice until she sat down. It was funny seeing how fast she scooted away on her butt when he asked if he had surprised her.
Seemingly to apologize, he did a little magic trick and gave her flowers. Of course, this got her hopes up, but when she took the flowers, they came away with his fake hand.
She didn’t even bother to say anything.
Delivery: Chiyo’s Hopes Un-dashed?
That kind of thing went on until he asked if they could walk home together. By now, Chiyo was on high alert. She jumped at every sound. She looked from side to side. They got a block away from school. Then two. Soon, they had even arrived at the train station. Still, Umetarou had not sprung an unwanted surprise on her. He said goodbye and started to walk away.
Chiyo’s guard was up all the way to the train station. Capture from the Blu Ray.
“Huh?” she said, surprised (12:31). “What happened to the surprise?”
“‘Why?’” he asked. “I just wanted to walk home with you.”
With that, he turned and walked off.
Chiyo was so shocked she dropped her purse. She could not believe her ears. He had been completely earnest and he had not destroyed her hopes! Seeing her hopes soar with nothing to smash them is a new experience. I was happy for her!
