Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun Episode 6 – Quick Summary
In Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun Episode 6, “I’ll Cast a Spell On You,” Chiyo Sakura noticed that Umetarou Nozaki had seemed a little tired lately. So, she brought him a song from a voice he admitted sounded heavenly – until he learned whose voice it was. The voice belonged to Yuzuki Seo, who was not only the “Lorelei” of the Glee Club, but the bane of Hirotaka Wakamatsu, one of Umetarou’s friends. Yuzuki had been causing Hirotaka so much trouble that he couldn’t sleep. That is, until he hears a heavenly voice on Umetarou’s stereo! Can Umetarou summon the courage to tell Hirotaka whose voice is so calming to him? And if he does, will Hirotaka ever sleep again? And why does Chiyo seem to find this all so funny?

Favorite Quote from Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun Episode 6
I think I’m on Umetarou’s side on this one. Capture from the Blu Ray.
I (dimly) remember high school. I remember caring what people thought, what with being an awkward teenager and all. Of course, I’ve outgrown all of that. Well, to be precise, I never cared what people thought, and I’m still awkward, but let’s not quibble.
The bottom line is that I remember people getting ridiculed mercilessly for the slightest misstatement. As a guy, I was particularly aware of things guys should not say. Never admit weakness. Never admit something had hurt. If your leg is laying twenty feet away, don’t let anyone know it hurts. Yeah, growing up in a rural community had some challenges.
Looks like it’s the same in an urban setting, too. Umetarou and Hirotaka were walking home together. Hirotaka said that he missed playing basketball with Umetarou and asked if Umetarou might consider playing again. Umetarou refused.
“I’m scared I might sprain my finger. So, no,” Umetarou answered without hesitation (03:05).
“Please don’t say such a pitiful thing so shamelessly,” Hirotaka said, apparently more in tune with social expectations than Umetarou – or me, for that matter!
I think I would have gotten along with Umetarou.

I think Hirotaka’s words touched Yuzuki. It was a glancing blow, but they clearly touched her! Capture from the Blu Ray.
Setup: Gentle Humor Rocks
I like this show’s gentle humor. I realized that’s what I liked best about this show because of the comments that Momomanamu left on episode 5. For years, I had in the back of my mind that this show’s humor felt distinctive to me, and I liked it because of that. But I didn’t take the time to ask myself why. So thanks, Momomanamu, for helping me figure it out!
This episode gave us a wonderful example of that kind of humor. It started off as a simple misunderstanding where the two characters talked past one another. But the misunderstanding went so far that it might have looped back on itself – which is not only funny, but warm and endearing, too!
Hirotaka had a problem. Ever since Yuzuki joined as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team, she seemed to be targeting Hirotaka more than anyone else. She’d flatten him with the basketball. She’d charge through him when driving. She was such a terror that most of the other players ran for their lives when she had the ball.
Yuzuki struck fear in the heart of the male basketball players. Capture from the Blu Ray.
Her actions inflicted such stress on him that he couldn’t sleep. Only the soothing sounds of the voice of the Lorelei of the Glee Club could lull him to sleep. Which was hilarious from our point of view, because we knew that voice belonged to Yuzuki.
The situation got so bad that he decided he had to confront her. Using Umetarou’s manga as a model, he even wrote her a challenge letter – complete with hearts and very romantic phrasing. It’s hard to know what Yuzuki thought of it. Her cluelessness level sets a high bar, and that’s saying a lot for this show. But she met him on the roof after school.
Delivery: Yuzuki is a Goddess
It was a beautiful scene. The animators looked like they had a great time with the sunset colors and shadows. Hirotaka kept trying to convey his exasperation, but he kept phrasing it like was a love confession. We did learn that they spent a lot of time together, even going to restaurants where he’d pay for the meals. He even said that he was furious she would buy a gift, but only for him.
Sounded a ton like a date to me. I wonder if either of them realized?
Be that as it may, he saw she wasn’t understanding his perspective. So he thought back to what he’d learned from Umetarou’s manga. He remembered that the female characters hated being compared to other female characters. So, he summoned all of his courage and practically yelled at her, “Lorelei-san of the glee club would never do that!”
Well, he got a point across. It just wasn’t the point he had intended. Capture from the Blu Ray.
Yuzuki seemed surprised. After all, she had to be aware of her nickname – Lorelei of the Glee Club. So she asked him what he meant. He gushed about her amazing singing voice. He said he listened to her music every day and that he could tell from her voice alone she was an amazing woman with a pure heart. The dude ended his rant with, “In short, I cannot live without her. She is my goddess!”
When she looked up at him, she was blushing. She asked if he could say that again. And you know what? As crazy as the conversation had been, as far apart as their perspectives were, I think his words touched her. But then, it must be kind of nice to hear someone you obviously like say you’re a goddess.
What did you think of Umetarou’s reactions while Hirotaka tried to get his point across to Yuzuki? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to share in the comments!

I love the kind of chaos that Yuzuki causes in this series! It really takes a special kind of character that can terrorize a whole basketball team while trying to “help” them train! Lol! Hey, that thanks for the shout out! It was a happy surprise!
You’re welcome! I appreciate you helping me figure out one of the reasons I like this show so much!
