Favorite Quote from Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun Episode 9
Chiyo is not a fan of tanuki outfits. Capture from the Blu Ray.
This show excels with funny one-liners, and that makes picking just one of them tough. But I think I know which one was my favorite. And yes, it’s partly because of how much I love Re:CREATORS and partly because I’m writing novels.
Yukari had become fed up with her editor’s demands for more tanuki. Umetarou and Chiyo decided to try reverse psychology on him: she decided to bury him in tanuki. She drew her main character in a tanuki suit and faxed it to him. Trouble was, he loved it. As in, he wanted her to go even farther.
Chiyo objected. She said she did not like the main character that Yukari had drawn. Yukari interpreted that to mean the character needed to look more severe, so she drew a new one – one that looked exactly like Umetarou. Chiyo was overjoyed; Umetarou didn’t see it looked like him, though.
Later, when Chiyo showed him Yukari’s signed drawing of the character, Umetarou thought she just liked the signature. He actually felt upset that she hadn’t ilked his signatures more. Not realizing she loved it because it looked like him, he offered to draw his main character for her – also with a signature. Bewildered, she refused, and he offered to add the heroine, too. She still refused. Then he said he’d go as far as to draw both in a tanuki suit.
“Nazuki,” she said in a stern voice (20:22). “You should treat your characters kindly.”
I certainly wouldn’t want my characters to get out and think I’d done them wrong.

They were not a fan of the car that drenched them. Capture from the Blu Ray.
Have you ever been talking to someone who writes novels and realize they’ve taken a quick mental side trip? They might be thinking of a scene in a novel they’re writing. That scene might have dialogue. And that dialogue might escape into reality if they’re not careful.
Yes, it has happened to me before. Yes, it has happened in a professional setting. It seems to be more likely to happen if I’m tired, because then my focus wavers. And apparently, it happens to Umetarou, too, just as it did in my favorite moment.
Some of the most memorable screen caps from the entire series come from Umetarou and Chiyo walking home in the rain. Both of them had forgotten their umbrellas and were momentarily at a loss for what to do. Umetarou tried to reconfigure his jacket, which didn’t work at all. At another point, he tried to be considerate of Chiyo by holding the umbrellas tilted to keep her more dry. The net effect was that he poured water directly onto the top of her head.
It’s the thought that counts. Though Chiyo would have appreciated a little more attention to detail! Capture from the Blu Ray.
My favorite moment came when the two were walking down a street. As he imagined a manga version of the scene, he thought that he really should walk between Chiyo and the street. So he switched positions. Still running the manga scene in his mind, he imagined that one of his characters might have said something like “No matter what happens, I’ll protect you with all my power from the rain.”
He liked the line. It felt like it would work. But then a car drove past them and drenched both of them.
“Even with all of my power,” he said (07:01), “I don’t think I could have prevented that.”
It’s a testament to how much Chiyo had gotten used to Umetarou that she did not even ask what he was talking about.
What did you think of Yuzuki Seo’s approach to letting Chiyo use her umbrella? What were your favorite moments from this episode? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

Haha, honestly watching this series it’s pretty funny to conceive how blinded Chiyo was with her feelings for Nozaki that she basically tolerates all his shindigs and flaws just to be with them. Needless to say though I’m liking this series so far and Seo Yuzuki is turning out to be someone who I can really vibe with despite her craziness 😂
Chiyo does seem to be blinded! I hate to say it, but I find that hopeful. Umetarou is a nice guy, but he’s a a writer through and through. I’ve never seen him do anything intentional to hurt Chiyo’s feeling, but the guy can’t help it. His way at looking at life is just two steps to the left of mainstream.
It’s hopeful because I’m a couple of steps further away than that!
