Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Episode 5 Review – Quick Summary
In Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Episode 5, “A Young Lady and Violence,” Rudeus learned a little more about why his father Paul had sent him away with Ghislaine Dedoldia. True to his word, Paul set Rudy up with his first job. Rudy was to tutor Eris Boreas Greyrat, who was likely a distant relation. Philip Boreas Greyrat, Eris’ father, mentioned that Eris might be a handful, so Rudy was on his best behavior. He expected her to be a challenge, so when she slapped him, he slapped her back. What he wasn’t ready for was her right hook, which put him on the ground. Then she jumped on him and started pounding. Can Rudy extract himself? If he does, can he find a way to tutor her? Or will have to take a long walk home?

Favorite Quote from Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Episode 5
Ghislaine wanted Rudy to send an incriminating letter about Paul to Zenith? Rudy was all in! Capture from the Funimation stream.
Paul had given Ghislaine a letter for Rudy to read. Apparently, Ghislaine can’t read, so she asked Rudy to read it out loud. Rudy was happy to. Paul pretty much confirmed what we had thought. Namely, that Paul wanted to keep Rudy away from Sylphiette for five years.
At the end of the letter, Paul made a mistake. Maybe he didn’t know that Rudy would read it to Ghislaine. But Paul had added a P.S. that said, “The young lady is fair game, but hands off the strongwoman. She’s mine” (02:25).
“I see,” Ghislaine said. “Send that letter to Zenith.”
“Will do,” Rudy promised. Once again, Paul dug his own grave.
Best in Show Moment for Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Episode 5
In that instant, through Eris’ eyes, I saw magic as something wondrous. That’s twice this show has done that for me. Capture from the Funimation stream.
Setup: Eris is Very Jaded for Her Age!
Wow, is Eris a handful or what? Before Rudy even met her, we learned from Philip that she’d already been through a large number of tutors who simply couldn’t deal with her. So, Rudy was prepared, or he thought he was. When she slapped him and he returned her slap, I thought for just the tiniest part of a second that he might just have knocked a little respect into her.
Then we learned what a seriously impressive right hook she has. Knocked poor Rudy clear across the room!
Jobless Reincarnation showed some real cleverness in this episode. While distracting us with how much of a brat that Eris could be, they also painted a picture of a little girl who was, despite her youth, very jaded. Nothing impressed her.
She woke up and found herself tied up? Not impressed. She angrily demanded that Rudy untie her, but it wasn’t like the experience of being bound was a problem. Some ugly, smelly dude came in and ordered her to shut up? Still not impressed. She’d seen strength and authority before.
Even brutality didn’t seem to impress Eris. Capture from the Funimation stream.
That same ugly smelly dude literally stomped her face into the floor? Even with several of her teeth lying around her wounded face, even though she could barely talk, her attitude didn’t change. She was angry and she was hurting and she was still a brat. The situation still didn’t get through to her.
Rudy healing her? Pah! She’d seen better. That didn’t touch her at all. In fact, it just made her complain more loudly. But there was something that would impress her.
Delivery: Even Eris Can Feel Wonder, of a Sort
When Rudy and Eris thought they’d made it back to safety, they learned that Thomas, one of Philip’s servants, had had enough of Eris’ temper. He meant to kidnap her for ransom, and I got the distinct impression Eris wouldn’t be going home even if Philip paid.
Eris actually looked a little scared. It was when it seemed like Rudy considered Thomas’ offer to give Rudy a cut of the profits if he cooperated with them. He could pay for 10 magic university scholarships if he agreed! But Rudy wasn’t buying it. And I have to say, Rudy impressed me in this episode. He is gaining confidence and the people around him are reacting to it.
It made sense that Eris feared Rudy would betray her. I mean, how could she not expect it? It would be reasonable for her to expect rough treatment for rough treatment. But Rudy didn’t betray her. Instead, he did something that amazed her so much that even in the arms of her kidnapper, she could only gape in astonishment.
Rudy showed some serious poise in this episode. Capture from the Funimation stream.
Rudy sent up what amounted to a flare. I don’t know if he knew that Ghislaine would be watching or not, but it was clear he wanted to announce his presence. The explosion was so big and so powerful that it made even Eris widen her eyes (17:44). Maybe the realization that Rudy wouldn’t betray her softened her a bit. But she was astonished.
Do you know how rare it is for a show to make me experience wonder? How rare it is for me to see magic as something actually magical? In the space of 5 episodes, this series has done it twice. And I can’t recall another series pulling it off even once. That’s sometime rare and beautiful, and it makes me glad I’m reviewing this series.
What did you think of Rudy saying that Roxy deserved all of the credit for his magic skills? What was your Best in Show moment? Let me know in the comments!
