Despite how much he learned, and despite how much confidence he had gained, he still suffered serious flashbacks to his previous life. Saying he had an unhappy childhood would have been an understatement. Will Rudeus ever be able to throw off the memories that shackle him to the past? Will he ever learn the why of some of the norms of behavior Roxy’s trying to teach him, along with magic? Or will he be forever confined to his own house and yard?

By himself! His parents Zenith and Paul felt proud, and more than a little surprised. At first, Rudy had a lot of fun. The weather was pleasant, the people he saw waved happily to him, and the scenery was spectacular. After awhile, he came upon three boys hurling mud balls at another who was couched, trying to protect his head. Rudy, outraged, tried to decide what to. Then the biggest of the bullies decided mud wasn’t enough and picked up a large stone. What will Rudy do? Will his own memories freeze him in place? Or will he stop the bullies?

Philip Boreas Greyrat, Eris’ father, mentioned that Eris might be a handful, so Rudy was on his best behavior. He expected her to be a challenge, so when she slapped him, he slapped her back. What he wasn’t ready for was her right hook, which put him on the ground. Then she jumped on him and started pounding. Can Rudy extract himself? If he does, can he find a way to tutor her? Or will have to take a long walk home?

Rudy agreed, seeing an opportunity: If that team got into trouble and Dead End rescued them, it could advanced Rudy’s plan. Sure enough, the team ran into some monsters, and Rudy saw his plan coming together. Until things went horribly, horribly wrong. Will Rudy’s fledgling confidence survive what happened next? And that’s not even considering what’s awaiting him back in town…
