My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5 Review – Quick Summary

In My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5, “It’s Probably Because This Is the Best Boob Bag Here,” Marin Kitagawa liked Wakana Gojou’s costume so much that she could not wait for him to take pictures. In fact, she was so happy with the costume that she could barely calm down enough to get into character! But she managed it. The pictures came out so well that she felt inspired to go to the cosplay event. She asked Wakana to go with her. Is that such a good idea, given how Wakana reacts to crowds? Is the costume really ready, or are there glitches? And how will the public react to Marin’s debut as Shizuku-tan?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Favorite Quote from My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5: Marin really should have checked with Wakana before adding two nuBras.

They’re both kind of new to this, so it’s understandable that mistakes were made! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I like (and write) hard science fiction. I also enjoy military science fiction and high fantasy. Why, then, am I having so much fun watching this show? I mean, basically, it’s about a tailor and a model! Neither of those are among my list of favorite things! But every week, I like the new episode even better than the previous, and I really liked the first episode.

That’s the power of character for you!

After a few photo sessions at the cosplay event, Marin rejoined Wakana. She had to bend over, because of a minor emergency. A minor, self-inflicted emergency. It seems that the previous evening, as Marin reviewed the photos that Wakana had taken of her in costume, she noticed that she did not present Shizuku-tan’s more than ample bosom. So, taking matters into her own hands, she put on two NuBras. Under her costume. That Wakana had designed specifically to fit her exact measurements.

Which is to say, her pre bi-nuBra measurements.

“My chest is literally about to burst,” she said (12:39).

He could only respond, “Of course it is!”

Did you know you can reuse a NuBra up to 100 times, with the proper care? I did not know that. I did not even know they existed until I watched this episode! See how educational anime can be?

Best in Show Moment for My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5: Marin almost panicked, thinking Wakana had left. Then she found him.

Ever been on the receiving end of a smile like that? No matter how old I get, that’s still something to treasure. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Wakana’s Expectation of Loss

I really, really wanted to pick Marin’s reaction to sleepy Wakana calling her beautiful as my favorite moment. It was wonderfully crafted, with its roots in episode 3 when Wakana said he reserved the word “beautiful” for something or someone very special to him. I loved the moment as much as it worried me. How’s Marin going to react now that she suspects how Wakana feels about her?

But instead of that (very cool!) moment, I’m choosing another because it hit me even harder. You may or may not have noticed, but I tend to have a low opinion of my writing skills. I hate everything I’ve ever written (with a few minor exceptions), and I only write because I can’t not write. Yeah, first world problems, I know, but that situation gives me insight into how confidence issues can affect people. And I think we all know that Wakana has confidence issues.

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5: Wakana was afraid that Marin would be done with him.

Wakana could not conceive of a world where Marin would want to talk to him, after he’d delivered on his promise to create her cosplay outfit. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Did you see how he acted at the cosplay event, as Marin posed for photographers? Seeing how everyone around him was enjoying themselves doing something they loved, he began to relax. He even began to spontaneously smile. Then a terrible thought struck him.

“Oh, right,” he thought, his smile vanishing (10:12). “I fulfilled my promise.” Given who he is, given his past, he thought that now he had delivered Marin’s costume, she would be done with him.

“It was so much fun,” he thought, using the past tense. For him, his time with Marin was ending, and today would be the last time he got to hang out with her.

Delivery: The Radiance of Marin’s Smile

There’s a lot to be said for being independent. I’ve evolved processes to write and improve my writing without confidence, and that’s better than the alternative. I’ve heard the advice not to depend on anyone else for my own self-concept, and I recognize that such advice is sound. Yet, moments like this one remind me there are others ways.

Even as Wakana felt crestfallen, he noticed Marin looking around, almost as if she were scared. Perplexed, he watched her from a distance, because he had moved away so she could have her moment in the spotlight. Then she found him, and the fear vanished. She gave him a smile that competed with the sun in its brilliance.

In that moment, in the microcosm created by the energy of her smile, even Wakana’s deep-seated and ingrained negativity vanished. The moment wasn’t magic. He’s still Wakana. In another few seconds, he’ll be back to normal. But in that instant, her smile elevated him, because he saw that smile was for him, and for him alone. Just to confirm what he thought he had seen, she ran up to him, his expression almost disbelieving. She said (12:00), “I thought you disappeared on me and I panicked.”

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 5: Marin was happy Wakana had not left

Marin almost panicked? How amazing must that have felt to Wakana? Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I’m pretty sure that in that moment, he felt like he could do anything. He probably could have, if it were for her.

I thought Stella and Ikki had good chemistry in Chivalry of a Failed Knight! But Marin and Wakana feel even more natural together.

What did you think of Wakana’s reaction to his first cosplay event? What were your favorite moments? Please feel free to let me know in the comments!

  1. This anime is just a bundle of fun to watch and honestly I think it is the show I most look forward to each week at the moment because I know I’m just going to enjoy watching it. I won’t argue it is the best ever or anything like that, but it is doing exactly what it needs to and it is making me smile. Love spending time with these two characters.

    1. I like how, in your review, you said said “watching My Dress Up Darling is an absolute joy.”

I tend to overanalyze everything. But when all’s said and done, watching something just because it brings joy is a good thing.

Please let me know what you think!
