My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 13 – Quick Summary

In My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 13, “Wakana Gojo, 15 Years Old, Teenager,” Marin has her heart set on a new cosplay. This time, it’s a bunny-girl suit! Wakana, intent on making the perfect bunny-girl costume, gives it his all – but can’t figure out how to keep the top from flopping down. Can he and Marin figure out a solution? Can they do it in time for Halloween? And why does Nowa look so suspicious?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Favorite Quote from My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 13

My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 13: Marin takes her hosiery seriously

Marin is serious about her hosiery. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

There’s something very attractive about how Marin is head-over-heels for Wakana, but she has no idea the impact she has on him. At least, I don’t think she does.

For example, based on her attitude and expression as she showed him that she was wearing skin-colored tights under her bunny-girl costume, she seemed completely oblivious to his reaction.

Same thing with his reaction to seeing her trying on the bunny-girl outfit for the first time. Given the cut of the costume, her panties were more than a little visible. Marin seemed to think that the problem was one of aesthetics. She honestly did not seem to understand that seeing her like that nearly killed the poor guy.

My favorite instance of this schtick was when she went on and on about the value of lines in bunny-girl costume hosiery. She had hundreds of photos showing attractive young women in a wide variety of hosiery – some with line, and some without. And obviously, she had taken the time to categorize them, because she scrolled through them without even looking at the screen.

As the hundredth photo scrolled past, Wakana asked himself (18:54), “What in the world is she showing me?”

If I had forgotten that Marin is a woman of culture, this scene reminded me.

Favorite Moment from My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 13

My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 13: Wakana began to think that maybe he wasn't creepy

Wakana is beginning to learn that no, he’s not creepy. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Yes, Wholesome and Sexy Can Coexist

I missed this show. I missed its positivity. It’s not just Marin’s energy and Wakana’s goodness. Marin hangs out with some decent folks. We could use more decent folks in the world.

The second season is underway, and I find it presents the same problem as the original series. Namely, that it takes me far too long to select my favorite quote. Favorite moment, too! Each episode used to be packed with both, and episode 13 is no exception.

I was this close (holds fingers a centi-meter apart) from picking the moment that the sales guy in the fabric/accessory store psyched himself up to support Wakana dressing in a bunny suit. True, on one hand, I could have lived my whole life happily without seeing the image of Wakana in such a suit. It’s just not a good look for him.

But the moment was so packed with wholesomeness that it really appealed to me.

My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 13: The store clerk made a bad assumption, but innocently

The man made a little mistake, but it was innocent – and wholesome, too. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Then the last scene happened, and my favorite scene became clear. It was pretty personal, too.

Ever deal with long-term trauma?

Wakana’s memory of that little girl (“Non-chan”) ridiculing him has haunted me since season one. Wakana had opened up to her. He had offered her something he thought beautiful and amazing. And she nuked him from close range.

When you’re young, you haven’t built up the callouses yet. Life hasn’t toughened your skin. So when she lashed out, it scarred him. It took Marin’s relentless-positivity to make him believe that there might be at least one other person who would not stone him to death for liking what he likes.

When one of Marin’s friends asked how Wakana knew to apply makeup, since that wasn’t a guy thing, all of that trauma came flooding back. I’ve seen, first hand, how that works. It is completely irrational. A gesture, a single word or phrase, can unleash those emotions thought locked away. Just like we saw with Wakana.

Delivery: Casual Kindness and Honesty

If given enough time, those feelings will take over. They’ll drive you to do irrational things, like lash out at your friends. Burning bridges, they call it, for good reason. There’s almost always flames and crumbling timbers involved (or their emotional equivalents).

They can also exacerbate the trauma and extend its hold on one. After all, if the folks around you don’t understand why you’re freaking out, they can withdraw – further isolating the one trying to get beyond this trauma.

But as Wakana’s trauma attempted to drag him into an emotional morass, the other guy with them said (22:03), “Guys can totally do it. You know my older brother does it, too… He goes to a vocational school for beauticians.”

Accidentally, without really intending to, they began easing Wakana’s reaction. They spoke of this like it was nothing. Just another skill. That’s when Marin weighed in and said that Wakana’s family operated a Hina doll shop.

My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 13: Marin seemed proud of Wakana's family and their Hina dolls

Miran just blurted out that Wakana’s family ran the Hina doll shop. And was Nowa getting into her song or what? Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Wakana panicked. Despite the direction the conversation had taken, he felt convinced they’d turn on him. But the same guy who had asked about makeup stood up and exclaimed (22:31), “I totally went to that shop on a field trip in grade school! It was on another level! Whoever made those is a mega-genius!”

The group went on talking about it, but Wakana retreated into himself. Not in shame or in humiliation. But in astonishment. “Maybe Non-chan’s the only one who ever called me creepy,” he thought (23:08).

Moments like this in real life don’t completely heal trauma. But they’re a start. They can begin to rebuild pathways consumed with darkness with more healthy attitudes. Wakana’s not out of the woods yet. But Marin has yet again helped him take another step. And this time, it was completely by accident!
