My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 22 – Quick Summary

In My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 22, “So We’re Gonna Do It All Right Now?!,” Wakana and Marin went back to Marin’s place. The trains remained unavailable. Wakana had to spend the night. Marin still thinks she knows what Wakana intends. Wakana has no clue. But this time, the stakes seem higher. Will Marin be able to handle the stress? How will Wakana react to the energy drink? Most importantly: what happens when he realizes the Coffin game isn’t a slice of life for nuns?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 22: Wakana wore Marin's Shizuku Kuroe shirt

The contrast between the two expressions is part of the humor. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Wakana found a way to frame his evening with Marin. He planned to chug energy drinks, play the game, and get through without going to sleep. Good plan, right?

Yeah, it’s a good plan. The thing is, circumstance – and Marin – conspired to disrupt his calm. He had to take a bath, because apparently that’s just what the Japanese do. And of course, he couldn’t just change into his old clothes, and he had not brought a change with him. After all, he had not planned on staying the night.

Marin, thoughtful soul that she is, had a sweatshirt ready for him. According to her, it was the only sweatshirt in a man’s size that she owned. Unfortunately for Wakana, the sweatshirt featured Shizuku Kuroe. With an expression I believe would be best described as Ahegao

The shirt itself would have sent him into shock just a few short months ago (series time). Now, he managed a calm demeanor as he asked (04:12), “Are you sure it’s all right for me to borrow this sweatshirt? Isn’t it rather important to you?”

Yes. Because the reason he didn’t want to wear the shirt was because it was “important” to her.

Setup: Misunderstandings Can Get Old

Generally speaking, I don’t like humor based on misunderstandings. Too often, the narrative seems to force the situation that keeps the misunderstanding alive. In My Dress-Up Darling, though, the misunderstanding was used for humor, yes. But it was also just a step towards an important bit of character development.

Marin had thought that Wakana bought a condom. However, when she woke up the next morning alone in bed, she suspected she’d gotten it wrong. The show didn’t try to perpetuate the misunderstanding. Instead, it became a reason for Marin’s self-doubt.

Her feelings for Wakana had caused her to misunderstand what she’d seen. Once she replayed the scene in her mind she realized he had actually knelt in front of the energy drinks. Which caused her to reevaluate why she had misunderstood in the first place. Which made her face the idea that it was time to do something.

My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 22: Marin realized she woke up alone

Marin realized the implications of her waking up alone. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Specifically, she realized she wanted to tell the guy how she felt. Because let’s face it: the dude’s not going to realize unless she comes out and tells him.

She couldn’t tell him right away. When she dashed into the living room, she found Wakana nearly catatonic after playing Coffin. And can we have a moment of silence for Wakana’s sanity? That game came close to wrecking him! She couldn’t tell him because the game had also destroyed his stomach, so he had  to go hurl.

Not exactly a romantic moment.I’ll be honest: the show morphed from comedy to pure drama (not melodrama) for the most of the rest of the episode, from Marin’s perspective. She realized she’d gotten comfortable with their relationship. She understood she wanted to take things to the next level. But even asking Nowa for advice didn’t help.

Delivery: Marin Re-Asserts Herself

Honestly, it was tough seeing her doubt herself so badly. I’m used to her being almost casually confident. It’s part of her character that I enjoy! But because she likes Wakana so much, it’s freaking her out.

My favorite moment came when she was walking home. She had realized she was terrified of the relationship not working. As she walked home, stuck in her own depression, two guys ran up and tried to hit on her.

“Hey, cutie,” one of them said (21:37). “Whatcha doin’ all by yourself? If you’re bored –”

Remembered, back in the first season, when some rando tried to hit on her? The rando who disrespected the anime/game figure she had on her purse? That Marin came back for a visit.

“Shut the hell up,” she snapped (21:42) with a sneer that might have stopped a charging bear.

My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Episode 22: Marin regained her voice

I was wondered where that version of Marin had gone! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

As she left the two stunned young men behind, she realized she did not like herself when she got depressed. She came to a decision.

“That’s it!” she told herself, her stride regaining confidence (21:56). “I’m done freaking out about this. I’ll tell him after the cosplay group. I’ll tell him. I’ll tell him! I’m gonna tell him for sure! I’m totally going to tell Gojo-kun that I love him!”

That’s the Marin I’ve gotten to know! I liked seeing her confront her doubts and make a decision to get past them. I’m pretty sure it’s not going to go quite as well as she hopes. But I’m really looking forward to how it plays out.

  1. I am loving this series!
I agree that not dragging out the misunderstanding is a good thing. And they used it to drive Marin towards a “better confess your love or else” moment.
I’m not sure if the writers will go there, but Wakana’s value has been skyrocketing among the cosplayers and his classmates. And it’s not just that he’s highly skilled at costumes and makeup. Being super-considerate, taking the time to read/watch/play their favorite media to research costumes, not understanding why anyone would be against crossplaying, and being emotionally wrecked by Coffin puts him in the rare category of “a guy who really understands me”.
Since they’re not really dating, will some other friend decide to snap him up?

    1. I’m seeing that, too. Not sure about JuJu, because I’m not sure JuJu’s sure about JuJu! But her sister certainly appreciates Wakana. So does Suzuka. Though she seems to appreciate a lot!

There’s a Reddit user who’s been posting that he thinks Nowa is Marin and Wakana’s granddaughter, traveling back in time to make sure they get together. Because wow, they need the help!

I wonder how Wakana would react to a confession from someone like Suzuka. She might be a bit old. Or maybe Akira? It seems to me that Wakana has this idea that Marin is a goddess who’s just passing through.

      1. And if hypothetical non-Marin girlfriend was clever, she’d start out asking for his help with an outfit that would require a lot of shopping trips to different stores, coming over to watch shows, and pay him back by going out for snacks and other activities. Basically what Marin’s been doing, but with more direction, and gradually find a less threatening way to seal the deal.
