My Favorite Anime Posts from 2020 Week 42
OGIUE MANIAX
A Harbinger of the Future? My Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom
If you’re a writer, sooner or later, you’ll have to confront the question of legacy. Will people talk about your works after you’re gone? To put a more “I’m not dead yet” spin on it, you have to confront the question, what makes your work worth remembering? I enjoy finding posts about series that have ended because they offer insights into that question. Why write about a series that has ended when so many new ones clammer for our attention? Because it did something that made you remember it! Or maybe it made you decide to watch it despite some of those shiny new series. That’s why I was so happy to find this post by sdshamshel on OGIUE MANIAX about My Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! What made Catarina Claes such a compelling hero? What about the show made it memorable? This post lays it all out. And, of course, this being a good review, now I want to rewatch the series again!
Never Argue with a Fish
Anime Corner: Steins;Gate Review
I’m not sure, but I strongly suspect that we all have a series — or 20 — that we want to watch, but just can’t make time to get to it. The backlog is real. For me, prior to the the whole 2020/COVID intrusion, there were two such series: Humanity has Declined and Steins;Gate. In the case of the former, I watched it back in March, after I started working from home. I had to do something to fill the time I used to commute! And now I will never hear Ava Maria the same again… For Steins;Gate, the situation was kinda complex. Instead of me saying why I was hesitant, let me point you at this post by Chris George Joynson from Never Argue with a Fish. He didn’t watch it sooner for the same reasons as me — and his reaction was the same as mine, too! Was it worth watching? If so, why? To find out, you know what you have to do!
Lita Kino Anime Corner
The Kabaneri Rush
There’s a tag going around now called Unpopular Opinions. First, please let me apologize to A Richard Wood Text Adventure and Anime as a Cup of Tea for not responding to their tags yet. Please consider this next comment a down payment — I promise I’ll answer as soon as I can! I try to celebrate anime here, so having a negative opinion goes against the grain. That’s not to say I’ll be dishonest in a review. I mean, just look at my Taboo Tattoo reviews… In this case, though, my unpopular opinion is right up my alley: I loved Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. You can tell by reading my reviews, but it doesn’t look like that’s the prevailing sentiment. Turns out I’m not alone! LitaKino from Lita Kino Anime Corner liked it, too! And for all the right reasons. And how do I know? Well, that’s easy to see by reading her review! And it’s that not enough, check out her post’s GIF of Yukina. If that’s not the mark of exceptional quality in anime, I don’t know what it!
Lethargic Ramblings
TOWER OF GOD: A RETROSPECTIVE
Speaking of unpopular opinions… Okay, my positive opinion of Tower of God might not be as far out of step with mainstream opinions as my thoughts on Kabaneri, but still, I was surprised by some of the negativity I saw about the series. I really enjoyed it, and not just because of Yuri and Endorsi. And Annak. And drunk Serena. There was a lot more to it than that. I could joke about the beautiful women in this series precisely because they were great characters. So what else was there to like? Glad you asked! This post by Lethargic Ramblings from the site Lethargic Ramblings lays it all out. It’s one of the best defenses of the show that I’ve read, and I’ve read a lot of them. If you haven’t watched the show, I bet this review will help you see the series in a positive light!
The Infinite Zenith
The Strike Witches Come Together- Strike Witches: Road to Berlin Second Episode Impressions and Review
There are some series that are, well, more anime that other anime series. By that, I mean there are some series that just couldn’t work in any other medium or that show anime sensibilities more than others. I’ve been thinking about it, and I’m not sure I can come up with a better example than Strike Witches: Road to Berlin. I mean, sure, making Elle as “cute as a button demon” is distinctly an anime kind of thing. But how much more anime can you get than turning cute girls into a WWII air force — and to get into their Strikers, they can’t wear pants? That’s on the leading edge of anime, that is! Plus, the designs of the Strikers are so well done that students of WWII aircraft can identify the airplane! The latest season debuted recently, and infinitezenith from The Infinite Zenith gives us a great rundown of what happens. Not only do we get witches in panties, we get some strong characterizations — and tactics, too! I still feel bad for the witches when they have to go on high altitude missions. Their poor legs have got to get chilly…

Thank you for the shoutout! It means a lot to get a mention here despite how inactive and not present I’ve been in the community recently.
I’m glad you had a good time reading it!
You’re welcome! It was nice seeing you writing again! Plus, I really enjoyed your take on Tower of God. I hope we get a second season at some point!
Both you and Lita aren’t alone😀 I loved it too! I think it’s a very underrated series, and I’m glad that Lita provided such a great post for it! Definitely a show I wished would’ve gotten a second season😢
Glad to hear it!
It’s not that I want to agree with everyone. It’s just nice to have some folks to share the fun with.
Have you seen the movies? I haven’t yet; the first two seem to recap the series, and the third, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato, seems to be new material. I’ll have to make time to find them!
No I haven’t seen the movies yet either. I do have them on the list, but like you I just have to find some time to watch them. I do have a week off work coming up in November, so maybe I can make a start with them then (and the gazillion other things I want to watch😂😂).
