My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 99 Review – Quick Summary
In My Hero Academia Season 5 episode 99, “Our Brawl,” Izuku Midoriya/Deku barely managed to regain control of One for All with the help of Ochako Uraraka/Uravity and Hitoshi Shinsou. Now that he’s stable, the teams from 1-A and 1-B explode into an all-out brawl. Asking Uraraka to trust him with Shinsou, Midoriya attacked. Shinsou had been looking forward to a re-match against Midoriya, but now he felt cheated — had Midoriya just faked an out of control Quirk to put him and the team from 1-B off guard? What would happen to their plan now that Midoriya seemed intent on taking Shinsou out? And if Midoriya’s near disaster had been real, why hadn’t the teachers stopped the match?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.
Favorite Quote from My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 99
Look, just because the guy’s eyes are bloodshot, there’s no reason to impugn his character! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
While watching the previous episode, I had to wonder why Shouta Aizawa/Eraser Head didn’t stop the match when he saw Midoriya’s Quirk go out of control. Toshinori Yagi/All Might and Sekijiro Kan/Blood Hero wondered the same thing. The three teachers watched from a vantage point near the incident. Aizawa explained that seeing Shinsou’s Quirk affecting Midoriya meant that Aizawa’s own Quirk could contain Midoriya if his Quirk went out of control again. So the teacher wasn’t worried.
Yagi didn’t seem convinced. He pressed Aizawa for more details, and Aizawa said that the participants, from Shinsou and Midoriya to Neito Monoma/Phantom Thief and Minoru Mineta/Grape Juice, looked absolutely determined to continue the match. Aizawa wanted to honor that determination.
Impressed, Yagi said (04:21), “You’re… nicer than you look.”
Talk about a back-handed compliment!
Best in Show Moment for My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 99
Deku remembered to give credit where credit was due. I admire that. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Many Small Cool Moments
This episode continued a trend I’ve noticed for MHA Season 5: Each episode has several really cool little moments. From a viewer’s perspective, that’s great. It makes the episode a lot of fun to watch. From my perspective, where I’m looking and hoping for one or more major moments, it’s been a little bit of a challenge.
This is in no way a criticism of the show! It’s been great fun to watch. But I live for huge emotional moments, like the one I found in Fruits Basket — The Final episode 9, “What’s Your Name.” Or the hilarious ecchi moment like I saw in Demon King Daimao’s episode 8, “Do You Have a Crush?” Or a literally breath-taking moment of wonder like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation gave me in episode 5, “A Young Lady and Violence.” These moments stick with me. These moments remind me fiction can be a terrifying power, and that I want to encourage its use for good.
Again, this isn’t in any way a criticism of this episode, or any others from MHA Season 5. It has a lot of cool little moments. The shot of Minoru Mineta/Grape Juice’s Grape Buckler earned an honest laugh out loud. Midoriya’s “I’m not scared of my power anymore” (09:54) gave me a thrill of pride for the young man’s courage. But it’s hard to write an entire post about either of those moments. It’d even be harder to stretch Aizawa’s “What was going on with you?” into a whole post! I want to give you solid entertainment in return for the time you invest in reading this. So, no stretching allowed!
Yagi’s reaction to seeing Midoriya regain was another great, little moment. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
That said, this episode did give us a moment that I thought reflected well on both how far Midoriya has come, and how well he’s remained true to who he is.
Delivery: Midoriya Continues to Be Gracious
This moment builds directly on what Uraraka did and what she asked Shinsou to do in the previous episode. Midoriya’s One for All went out of control, primarily, we learned, because he couldn’t manage his emotions. Only Uraraka’s quick-thinking saved Midoriya from harming himself or those around him. Her quick-thinking included asking Shinsou to use his Brainwash Quirk to force Deku to shut down, even if only for a moment.
This episode showed us the aftermath: Team 1-A and 1-B engaged in a brawl. Neither team’s plans survived the encounter with the enemy, so they had to slug it out. Team 1-A eventually won, but for Midoriya, learning about the Blackwhip Quirk and its original owner (fifth inheritor of One for All Daigoro Banjo), made the victory almost irrelevant. He had to feel elated that One for All promised him five powerful Quirks. At the same time, he had to feel the weight of how much training he’d need before he could master even one of them.
In other words, the young man had to have a lot on his mind. That’s what made my favorite moment so special. In spite of that weight, Midoriya didn’t forget his gratitude to Uraraka and Shinsou. Deku knew clearly that without them, a dangerous situation could have spun out of control.
Admitting that he had no idea at the time what had happened, he said (18:52), “But thanks to Uraraka and Shinsou for stopping me… If Shinsou hadn’t made me pass out with Brainwashing, I don’t know what would’ve happened.”
Uraraka handled Midoriya’s praise without apparent embarrassment. It was only when Ashido mentioned a different perspective that Uraraka blushed. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
He could easily have focused on his own peril or what he had learned. Instead, he remembered his team. Even better, he gave them the credit they had earned. I’ve seen people become arrogant as they gained power. I’m glad to see that at least so far, Midoriya hasn’t taken that path.
What did you think of Mina Ashido/Alien Queen teasing Uraraka about how hard she had hugged Deku? What was your Best in Show moment? Let me know in the comments!
