NieR:Automata Ver1.1a Episode 11 – Quick Summary

In NieR:Automata Ver 1.1a Episode 11, “head[Y] battle”, the Machine Lifeforms seemed to have gone mad after Eve’s fall. They launched al all-out assault against the Android outposts. A strange new type of Machine Lifeforms had appeared – fast, brutal, and hungry. Commander White ordered a wide-scale deployment, but there were so many battles that 2B was left on her own. Can she get to Lily and Jackass in time?

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a Episode 11: Commander White did the best she could

Commander White played the hand dealt her. It’s not her fault her hand sucked. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I haven’t yet finished playing the video game Nier:Automata. And by “yet finished,” I haven’t gotten past the point where I can save for the first time. Yeah, I’m not proud of that, but hey, I don’t have a lot of time to play anymore!

I bring this up because beyond a general sense of foreboding, I don’t know the secrets of this world. I suspect the Council of Humanity is no more human than Commander White or 2B. Also, I suspect the Machine Lifeforms are closer to being alive than the narrative has let on. But I don’t know.

All I can do is try to put the pieces together. One such piece might be my favorite quote from this episode. Command White begged the Council of Humanity to give her broader capabilities to protect her soldiers on the ground. They gave her some bureautic BS about a higher priority (if they’re not human, they at least mimic that aspect really well!). After they cut the connection, she spoke.

“So I must repeat it all over again,” she said, obviously not happy about the realization (07:03). Little clues like that are fun to try to piece together!

Favorite Moment from NieR:Automata Ver1.1a Episode 11

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a Episode 11: 9S couldn't believe his good fortune

9S could not believe his ears. Had she really said what he thought she said? Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I know they’re supposed to be non-human androids. But I can’t help reacting to 2B and 9S as if they’re human. I can’t tell if presenting them this way is merely a genre trope, or if it’s Yoko Taro’s way of getting us to question what it means to be human. Or both. Hard to say with NieR:Automata.

Regardless of the why, I think of them as human characters. That’s why my favorite moment resonated so much. Sure, I could have chosen some of the intense action scenes from this episode, but a quiet little moment affected me more.

2B and 9S had a plan to defend Lily’s camp. It was an audacious plan – dangerous, too, especially for 9S. He had to conduct an aerial attack against Adam’s colossal Machine Lifeform conglomeration. It was so dangerous that were it not for Pascal’s timely rescue, 9S’ black box might not even have been recoverable.

2B didn’t let it interrupt her battle, but she had to think he’d been lost. So as she stood, doubtless relieved that their plan had worked and the missile exploded above the clouds, she saw Pascal flying in with an unexpected cargo.

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a Episode 11: 2B watched the missile explode

She had to be happy the Adam-monster seemed to have been destroyed. Still, she had to think that 9S had gone with it. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

“9S!” she said, hugely relieved (20:23).

He then began one of his usual rambling monologues. 2B didn’t let him finish, though. Remember back through the whole season, 9S had been trying to get her to call him “Nines?” Well, as he spoke, she said (20:31), “You really are reckless, Nine-ez.”

He couldn’t believe his ears. Overjoyed, he tried to get her to confirm it. Of course, there was no way she was going to get into a conversation like that, so she cut the channel. Still, it was a lot of fun seeing them come closer together. No matter what Command White’s earlier quote might have meant.
