Other Posts to Crow About – 2018 Week 22 Edition

Twenty-second week of 2018 edition!

This is a Crow’s eye view of the posts that caught my attention this week. Typically, they’ll be posts that celebrate some aspect of anime, like strong characters, intricate plots, or amazing worlds.

There are only two rules:

  • I have to find the site to read it. I publish a list of the sites I review every week, so please do look for your site! If you don’t see it, I’d love for you to mention your site in the comments.
  • Your post had to have been published during the last seven days (or so)

Remember, you can find a list of the sites I check every week here

There’re a lot of good posts in the anime space. I hope this post helps you find some of them!

The Animanga Spellbook

Why Don’t Subtitlers Always Translate Anime Song Lyrics?

This post from The Animanga Spellbook brings up a question I’ve often wondered about. Especially in cases where the songs are important to the plot, why don’t professionals who create subtitles translate the songs? I’m happy to say that this article puts my worst fear to rest: namely, my fear that companies just got lazy! The real reasons are much more interesting!

Boku no Hero Academia S3 – 09

Have you been watching My Hero Academia this season? If not, you’re missing something special. I’m not talking about the usual things folks bring up about this series, like its excellent drama, strong plotting, and likeable characters. No, it’s something that for me is even more important: an element of realism that’s often missing from similar shows. Anime Evo just posted an article that focuses on this aspect — and its implication for our young heroes.

Sakura Megumi, A Good Teacher Never Dies

If you watched School-Live, you’ll likely remember at least two things: That Yuki Takeya was probably the most realistic character ever to inhabit a zombie apocalypse (at least in terms of its psychological impact on her) and that Sakura Megumi was one of the best teachers, well, ever. It’s hard to say why without giving away any spoilers, and anyway, this post from I Drink and Watch Anime does a better job than I could explaining it, anyway.

Should You Watch…FLCL?

I’ve seen some posts about FLCL come across my Twitter timeline, and the style of art made me curious. Would I like this show? Should I add it to my backlog? Opinions seemed all over the place, from “Don’t waste your time” to “What, you haven’t watched it yet, you idiot?” Neither perspective really answered my question! Fortunately, this post from railgunfan75’s Geek Blog succeeds where others have failed. Oh, and this post convinced me to add FLCL to my backlog!

UEM!

What Manga Tokyo’s ‘Redefining Otaku’ Article Gets Wrong

I’ve avoided using the word otaku in my writing, for a number of reasons. The most important reason is that I dimly understood that the word had cultural connotations beyond my sphere of understanding, and if I were to use the word, I risked using it disrespectfully. I’m an idiot, and I may do something disrespectful, but only by accident — life’s too short to treat people or concepts poorly! This post by UEM! not only presents a coherent perspective on the issue, it provides links and summaries of conflicting opinions.

  1. Oh my – I always get such a thrill by making it on here. All those posts are so great. I thought both the UEM one and the Manga Tokyo post it refers to are very interesting although I somewhat disagree with both.

    1. That’s one of the things that makes researching these posts so enjoyable: The diversity and complexity of opinions in this community! Even if I don’t agree with some of them, I like how the different perspectives help me better understand a topic.

Please let me know what you think!
