Other Posts to Crow About – 2018 Week 47 Edition

Forty-seventh week of 2018 edition!

This is a Crow’s eye view of the posts that caught my attention this week. Typically, they’ll be posts that celebrate some aspect of anime, like strong characters, moments of beauty, or amazing worlds.

There are only two rules:

  1. I have to find the site to read it. I publish a list of the sites I review every week, so please do look for your site! If you don’t see it, I’d love for you to mention your site in the comments so I can add it to the list!
  2. Your post had to have been published during the last seven days (or so)

Remember, you can find a list of the sites I check every week here

There’re a lot of good posts in the anime blogsphere. I hope this article helps you find some of them!

Anime Evo

To Aru Majutsu no Index III – 07

I can’t tell you how excited I was to hear that A Certain Magical Index was getting a third season! It stars one of my favorite hapless heroes, Touma Kamijou, as well as one of the strongest female characters out there, Mikoto Misaka. This series has always had lovable (or detestable!) side characters, but it might be even better known for its wildly complex politics and alliances. This article from Anime Evo captures all of that in a tight, insightful review of the seventh episode. It also highlights Itsuwa, a character who’s really coming into her own in this season. The article has some great screen captures, too!

Average Joe Reviews

Books That Could Be Anime – Discussion

“What if” discussions can be a lot of fun. This post from Average Joe Reviews asks the question, “What if these books could become anime series?” It then goes on to discuss six books or series of books that would make good anime series. One of the six suggestions is so outrageous that I couldn’t believe it — until I read the author’s reasoning. I’m still not convinced, but I have to concede that the idea is interesting! See if you can see which one provoked my disbelief!

The Chuuni Corner

Review/discussion about: Love Live! Sunshine!! 2nd Season

You might read some of my reviews and think I’m stupidly optimistic and accepting about anime. While I can’t blame you (the evidence is there!), I’m actually a terrible snob. There are some series that I just can’t engage, no matter how hard I try. One example of Love Live! I dropped it after a couple of episodes, and that’s always bothered me because reviewers whose opinions I respect really liked the show. I’ve tried to forget about it, but then I read a post like this one from The Chuuni Corner. The review’s honest, even pointing out some of the second season’s flaws, but it still makes me wish I could force myself to watch the show! That’s pretty high praise for a review!

Honey’s Anime

Land of the Lustrous and the Significance of Sound in its Story

Land of the Lustrous is a series whose beautiful imagery captivated my imagination. Like the sequence in the third episode where Cinnabar accidentally gives Diamond a clue to saving Phosphophyllite, sending a hopeful Diamond dashing back to their dorm. The music, the action, the colors — everything came together in a mesmerizing sequence that I can watch over and over again. And it’s hardly the only scene that does that for me! This article from Honey’s Anime gives a great description of the techniques the director, sound editor, and others used to bring these scenes alive. If you liked this series, this article should deepen your appreciation of the work that went into making it look effortless!

I Drink and Watch Anime

My Hero Academia s3 – The Peculiar Strength of Accepting Weakness

If you’re watching My Hero Academia, at what point did you realize you were watching something special — something that is, right before your eyes, taking character and theme and action to a level that’s rarely seen? For me, it was the third season — the one that just wrapped up. I had a general sense that it was exceptional, but it wasn’t until I read this post from I Drink and Watch Anime that I could articulate why. If All Might’s last stand brought you to tears, or if you just want to read an amazing celebration of what makes the third season so special, then I think this article if for you.

The Moyatorium

Anime x Lit Crit: Vampires & Valentines – Toradora! 12

How I mentioned how much I loved the series Toradora? One of these days I’m going to have to give it the Caw of Fame Award… Anyway, the show has more than its fair share of amazing moments and characters, and this post from The Moyatorium managed to pick some of the better moments in a particularly dramatic episode. This is the episode where Taiga invites her estranged father to watch her star in a school play. Ryuji encouraged Taiga, which provoked Minori’s fury —  which is itself astonishing. This article gave me a renewed sense of why I liked the series so much.
