Other Posts to Crow About – 2018 Week 8 Edition

Eighth week of 2018 edition!

This is a Crow’s eye view of the posts that caught my attention this week. Typically, they’ll be posts that celebrate some aspect of anime, in particular strong characters, intricate plots, or amazing worlds.

There are only two rules:

  • I have to find the site to read it. So, if you never see your site mentioned, it might be that I don’t know it’s there! Please feel free to mention your site in the comments.
  • The post had to have been published during the last seven days (or so)

You can find a list of the sites I check every week here

There’re a lot of good posts in the anime space. I hope this post helps you find some of them!

ATELIER EMILY for me, in full bloom

The Melancholy of Dia: Change in Land of the Lustrous

While Phosphophyllite gets most of the attention as the dynamic main character, Land of the Lustrous gives several of its other characters their moments to shine. This article from ATELIER EMILY for me, in full bloom explores the challenges that Diamond faces.  I thought the examples used in the article were spot on. On a side note, the article uses what seems to be the accepted pronouns for the gems (third person plural, like “they”), which I have no objection against — as writers, we have to use something! This series and this article have made me reflect, again, on how our language (English, at least) makes such confining assumptions about gender, and the result of awkward phrasing is the least of the implications!

Exploring the World of Anime and Manga

Fullmetal Alchemist volume one Analysis and anime comparison: comparing the introductions

I’m a huge fan of both the first anime series to be released, Fullmetal Alchemist, as well as the second to be released, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I’ve often mused on the different approaches the two series took to several of the main characters. I loved how Exploring the World of Anime and Manga’s  article not only took a fascinating look at the difference between the two series, but included the manga in the analysis as well.

Floating into Bliss

[Script] Debunking 5 Yuri Misconceptions

I’m a big fan of understanding; conversely, I detest misconceptions, especially when I have them! And as it turns out, I’m a fan of many Yuri series. Those are the first set of reasons that I really enjoyed Floating into Bliss’ post that disproves some common misunderstandings about Yuri. Another reason I liked the article? It was a a lot of fun to read! I guess a good command of the subject and a light touch with prose will do that.

I Drink and Watch Anime

A Record of Grancrest War Ep 8 OMG! Character Development!!! (Winter Games 2018)

If you read my site, then you know that Record of Grancrest War is one of the series I’m reviewing this season. Generally speaking, I enjoy the show, but even my optimistic view of anime doesn’t blind me to some of the show’s challenges. In particular, the show’s almost frantic pacing too often shoves characterization aside. But not this week! As this post from I Drink and Watch Anime proves, Grancrest can do characterization — and do it well! Plus, the post gets extra style point for a cool intro graphic.

Let’s Talk Anime

Bakugou Katsuki: An Analysis (My Hero Academia)

My Hero Academia is clearly a popular show, in part because of its strong cast of characters. A character that I admit has rubbed me the wrong way is Bakugou Katsuki. This post from Let’s Talk Anime not only expresses why I have so far struggled to like this character. This post also shows with clarity why I should like this character — despite his anger issues! I have to admit that this post gave me a new perspective on the character — and if you knew me, you’d know that most people around me have despaired of ever changing my mind about anything!

A Piece of Anime

Overlord: The Pros and Cons of Mindless Entertainment

I really enjoy Overlord II, but like I said about Grancrest, I’m not blind to its flaws. Since this site’s goal is to celebrate anime, this is a position I’m really comfortable with! That’s why I read this post about Overlord II with such enthusiasm: the author has been harsh on Overlord before, but acknowledges that it can be entertaining. I really liked the reasons why. I think you’ll like them, too!

The Spooky Red Head

11 Reasons to Watch ‘Aldnoah Zero’

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: It’s hard to write a list that I find fresh and interesting! It’s no fault of anyone writing lists: it’s my jadedness that’s the problem! That’s why I enjoy a list that captures something interesting, and if the writer sprinkles in some humor, then all the better! This list of reasons to like Aldnoah Zero from The Spooky Red Head is just such a list! I think there one aspect of the series in particular that appealed to the writer — see if you can pick out what it was!

Therefore It Is

Identity Genderless and Buddhist Transcendence in Land of the Lustrous

Apparently, it’s Land of the Lustrous week in Other Posts to Crow About! Remember earlier in this post when I lamented about the limitations of the English language when it comes to genderless gems? Well, Therefore It Is goes beyond that pathetically simply musing to present a scholarly discussion of gender in context of Buddhist Transcendence! As someone with a degree in theology, I found the post engrossing. But even if you don’t have such a leaning, seeing some of the history and concepts behind Land of the Lustrous will only deepen your appreciation of that work of art!

Wrong Every Time

Toradora – Episode 1

As if I need more reasons to love Toradora… First, you know you’re going to attract my attention with a Toradora post. Second, if you add extra layers of complexity, like looking at the series again after 10 years, well, you’re likely to find your post mentioned in Other Posts to Crow About! This article from Wrong Every Time was a great reminder of some of the things I so enjoyed about the series. It even added a few new reasons to the list!
