Other Posts to Crow About – 2019 Week 05 Edition

Fifth week of 2019 edition!

This is a Crow’s eye view of the posts that caught my attention this week. Typically, they’ll be posts that celebrate some aspect of anime, like strong characters, moments of beauty, or amazing worlds.

There are only two rules:

  1. I have to find the site to read it. I publish a list of the sites I review every week, so please do look for your site! If you don’t see it, I’d love for you to mention your site in the comments so I can add it to the list!
  2. Your post had to have been published during the last seven days (or so)

Remember, you can find a list of the sites I check every week here

There’re a lot of good posts in the anime blogsphere. I hope this article helps you find some of them!

The Chuuni Corner

Houseki no Kuni, Toy Story, and Understanding Characters

I’m always on the lookout for interesting characters — it’s part of this site’s tagline! For the most part, you can look at a character and just know, “Yep! This one’s interesting!” But have you ever thought about the craft that goes into creating an interesting character? I have, not only as a viewer, but as a writer. This article from The Chuuni Corner is a great primer on building characters in the context of the story. To be honest, even though I’ve been writing a long time (longer than most of y’all have been alive!), I was pleasantly surprised when I learned a new character position. After reading the article, I wonder if you can guess which was new to me? If you have any interest in characters — even if you just want to better appreciate a character while you watch anime series — this article is for you!

Curiously Dead Cat

Shield Hero: A Slave By Any Other Name

I’ve been watching The Rising of the Shield Hero. I did not like the first episode at all, because I thought the show had serious dramatic and world-building issues. The kingdom’s supposed to be a matriarchy, but it’s ruled by a king? Everyone just happens to hate the Shield Hero — but we’re not allowed to know why? A number of Twitter users urged me to stick with it because the reasons would come out, so here I am — still watching. But episode 4? My experience watching episode 4 felt like the show was taunting me. Not only is there a king (of the matriarchy!), but there’s an evil scheming pope as well! Even worse was the “discussion” around Raphtalia as a slave. I’m beginning to wonder if I were the only one seeing the structural flaws and not getting involved in the political/meme-level discussion! Well, I’m happy to report that I found an article from Curiously Dead Cat that not only gets it, but was able to explain it! I highly recommend this article for your daily dose of healing clarity!

I Drink and Watch Anime

Anime Detox

Posts from I Drink and Watch Anime are no stranger to Other Posts to Crow About! The site draws readers in with a unique combination of humor, insight, good grace, and flat-out enjoyable writing. The wide variety of topics helps, too! Now, I’ll give you a hint about posts on this site: If they start with a phrase like “Today, I’m going to step out of my comfort zone once again,” buckle up. It’s going to be a great ride! As evidence, I offer this article about some of the current vitriolic conversations in the anime space. Are we doomed to a life of negativity? Or is there a better way? Yep, there’s a better way, and it’s in this article. After you read it, keep going and read the comments. I came away from the article and its comments with some hope for our future. I hope it’ll have the same impact on you!

Mechanical Anime Reviews

[January 2019 OWLS Tour] Land of the Lustrous: Composite Formation

Sometimes, a series comes out of nowhere and blows me away. Land of the Lustrous was one of those. It had amazing characters like Phos and Diamond, it had a fantastically deadly and beautiful set of villains, it had wonderful art… Well, you get the idea. I could go on and on about this series, but you know what? This post from Mechanical Anime Reviews brings up cool and amazing things about this series from a different perspective. What do I mean? Well, you’ll need to read the article to find out, but I’ll just say this: I really enjoyed how the article used the main character as a lens to interpret the entire first season.

Watashi wa bucho!!

30 Days of Anime Challenge – #27 My Favourite Scene in Which a Character Acts like a Complete and Utter Badass

You’ve watched My Hero Academia, right? Then you know who Izuku Midoriya is. If someone asked you to name a badass from that series, would you think of him? Or would you think of someone like this “friend” Katsuki Bakugou? I wouldn’t blame you for the latter, but I’d suggest you’re missing something. Something critical to character and to what it is to actually be a badass. What am I talking about? Well, as usual, I don’t want to spoil the surprise, so I’ll direct you to this article from Watashi wa bucho!!. I’ll give you one hint: What the major difference between Midoriya and Bakugou? Raw power? No, it something more fundamental — something that this article talks about.

  1. Thanks for the shout-out, Crow! Though I think your description of my post might actually be better than the post itself! Ha, ha! I’m so glad that you enjoyed it though!
