Sixteenth week of 2019 edition!
This is a Crow’s eye view of the posts that caught my attention this week. Typically, they’ll be posts that celebrate some aspect of anime, like strong characters, moments of beauty, or amazing worlds.
There are only two rules:
- I have to find the site to read it. I publish a list of the sites I review every week, so please do look for your site! If you don’t see it, I’d love for you to mention your site in the comments so I can add it to the list!
- Your post had to have been published during the last seven days (or so)
Remember, you can find a list of the sites I check every week here.
There’re a lot of good posts in the anime blogosphere. I hope this article helps you find some of them!
Review Order
This week, I reviewed the sites in reverse alphabetical order (Z to A).
Shallow Dives in Anime
Saga of Tanya the Evil: Just what the Doctor Ordered
Tired of the “same ol’ same ol'” when it comes to the Isekai genre? Seen one NEET too many wake up in another world to experience the adulation he could never have dreamed of in our world? Aching to see something different from this genre? Well, have I got an article tailor made for you! Dewbond’s post on Shallow Dives in Anime celebrates Saga of Tanya the Evil in all of its subversive glory. The post identifies exactly why you should watch the show if you haven’t — and why you should watch it again if you have.
Merlin’s Musings
5 Anime “Ships”
Isn’t it funny how enthusiastically we can root for romance to blossom between two fictional characters? There’s something hopeful about that. It’s like it’s an appeal to our better angels (at least, if the romance healthy — but let’s not go down a dark alley here…). I’m no different. I want the characters I like to find someone special to them, so when I came across this post on Merlin’s Musings, I thought I’d check it out. I’m glad I did! The 5 anime relationships in the post were as interesting as they were varied. My favorites were #2 (a generous mixture of sweetness and tragedy), #3 (too often overlooked!), and #5 (c’mon — if you watched the series, you had to root for them!). Check out the article to see if your favorites made the list!
Lost in Anime
One-Punch Man Season 2 – 02
Are you watching One-Punch Man Second Season? I am. In fact, it’s one of the series I’m using to experiment with a new feature called Best in Show, where I pick my favorite moment in an episode. Ideally, a good show will make that hard, because it’ll try to overwhelm me with options! Did the second episode of One-Punch Man do that? That’s the question Guardian Enzo’s post on Lost in Anime explores. I’ll give you a hint: The answer’s yes. Wait, that’s more than a hint! Good thing the really interesting thing about the article is how it describes those cool moments!
I Drink and Watch Anime
The Social Consciousness of WordPress Anime
There’s a reason I chose to blog rather than to make videos or post on popular web sites. I suppose I could write thousands of words to describe why, and before this week, I was slightly tempted to try. But then I read Irina’s post on I Drink and Watch Anime, and I realized something: this was perhaps the definitive work on the topic! And whatever minor aspects of the topic that the post didn’t address got a thorough treatment in the comments. Just what the heck am I talking about? I’m talking about the core of what makes blogging the platform of my choice. I’ll give you a hint: It has something to do with community. But probably not in a way that you expect! It’s easy to find out for sure — you know what you should do!
Confessions of an Overage Otaku
SEX AND SEXUALITY: KILL LA KILL
I just mentioned that Saga of Tanya the Evil was subversive, didn’t I? Well, let me introduce an article about another subversive series: Kill La Kill! It takes subversion to a new and meta level, as this post by Dave D’Alessio on Confessions of an Overage Otaku illustrates. The post starts out by tackling some misconceptions about the show, like the idea it’s “just” fanservice. It also tosses a thermo-nuclear grenade into the heart of the assertion that the show is inherently sexist — I mean, come on, how cool is it that the post unironically references the Bechdel test? But that’s just one part of this post that explains just how out there this series really was — in a fantastically crafted way. Honestly, I’ve watched the series multiple times, and this post illuminated the meaning in some scenes — meaning that I just missed. Oh, well, guess I’ll have to watch it again!
As always thank you so much for adding me to the list
Your post made it an easy choice! I really enjoy well-thought out and balanced work, especially on a topic that can so easily be polarizing!
Cool! Thanks for saying so!
And seriously, #3? That’s one of those series I think deserves more attention. Glad you included it in your list!
This just made my day! 🙂
I’m glad you liked my post, and my choices, so much! 😀
