Other Posts to Crow About – 2019 Week 17 Edition

Seventeenth week of 2019 edition!

This is a Crow’s eye view of the posts that caught my attention this week. Typically, they’ll be posts that celebrate some aspect of anime, like strong characters, moments of beauty, or amazing worlds.

There are only two rules:

  1. I have to find the site to read it. I publish a list of the sites I review every week, so please do look for your site! If you don’t see it, I’d love for you to mention your site in the comments so I can add it to the list!
  2. Your post had to have been published during the last seven days (or so)

Remember, you can find a list of the sites I check every week here

There’re a lot of good posts in the anime blogosphere. I hope this article helps you find some of them!

Review Order

This week, I reviewed the sites in alphabetical order (A to Z).

ONE PUNCH MAN SEASON 2 : THE HUNT BEGINS

I like to pretend to be a student of psychology. In particular, I like study how multiple folks can watch an episode or read an editorial and come away with wildly different opinions. It had a lot to do with the interplay between the imprecision of language and the experience-driven perceptions of the viewer, but it’s often hard to articulate. For example: I’ve really enjoying the second season of One Punch Man. And no, it’s not just because of Fubuki (though I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t ecstatic that she seems to have entered Saitama’s orbit!). At the same time, I’ve read a lot of reviews that not only dislike the new season — they almost seem affronted that this season exists! For reasons that are obvious if you’ve anything I’ve written, I’m always open to idea that I live so far out in left field that my views are strange and disconcerting. So I was relieved to find this post by Anna from Believe in Geek. This review rejoices in the same details about the show that I am — and honestly, there’s a lot to like in this season! If you need proof, you know what you have to do!

OKAY, I THINK I’M DONE, HERE | RISING OF THE SHIELD HERO | EPISODE 15 REVIEW

You ever watch a show that you desperately want to like, and the show fights you tooth and nail? For me, that show is Rising of the Shield Hero. I’ve groused about it from time to time even while I was trying to enjoy it. I mean, it stars Raphtalia, who’s one of the most sympathetic characters like, ever. So what’s stopping me from liking it? I won’t bore you by recapping my reasons (and no, it doesn’t have anything to do with some random Twitter user calling me an entitled millennial — I mean, good Lord, my youngest daughter is almost too old to be considered a millennial!). What I would like to do is direct you to this post by Chris Voyage over on Galvanic. It’s a great capsule summary of why this series has been such a disappointment. And it didn’t have to be!

OGIUE MANIAX

Why Emma in “The Promised Neverland” is a Fantastic Character

I have a confession to make: I enjoyed The Promised Neverland. Okay, that’s not a secret; if you read my collaboration reviews with Irina from I Drink and Watch Anime, you know we liked the show quite a lot. The show impressed me not only with its own quality, but with the quality of the discussions it generated in the blogosphere. This post by sdshamshel from OGIUE MANIAX is a great example. Emma is one of the show’s main characters, and in some respects, she’s a typical hero. But in other ways, as this article demonstrates, she’s very atypical. If you’d like more reasons to like Emma’s character, you need look no father!

5 MAL Scores I Disagree With

You ever read a review on My Anime List (MAL) and think, “Wait, what?” For me, looking at Re:CREATORs’ score (7.65) compared to my score of 10 makes me wonder why others don’t see the greatness I see. Conversely, I see Steins;Gate (which I had to drop) rated at 9.13. That makes me wonder what I’m missing that others see! Well, it turns out that tfwanime from tfwanime wondered the same thing! This article has some controversial choices that include a solid defense — in other words, great topics of discussion! And for the record? I heartily endorse the third item on the list. It seriously deserves to be ranked higher than it is!

Watashi Wa Bucho!!

Fruits Basket Episode Three – the Pitfalls of Jealousy

You know how I just mentioned that one way (of the many!) I measure the quality of The Promised Neverland is the number of insightful, interesting posts about it? Well, it looks like this season’s equivalent might be Fruits Basket (and I’m not just saying that because it’s part of the new Best in Show series!). There’s an interesting character dynamic at the heart of this show, and Ty-chama from Watashi Wa Bucho!! lays it out with clarity and simplicity. What’s the source of much of the dramatic tension in the first few episodes? Which of Tohru’s life-giving traits have had the most impact? You need to read the article to find out!

  1. Thank-you for the shout-out (and for giving me some excellent sounding posts to read after I’m done here)! You always do such a fantastic job of making my posts sound so good, I’m always extremely flattered and grateful! I hope that you’ll continue to enjoy my Fruits Basket posts in the weeks to come!

    1. “You always do such a fantastic job of making my posts sound so good, I’m always extremely flattered and grateful! ”

I can only do that if the source material supports it! So thanks for making it easy!

“I hope that you’ll continue to enjoy my Fruits Basket posts in the weeks to come!”

Cool — I’m looking forward to reading them!

  2. Now that really is controversial on Steins;Gate. But so are my thoughts on Your Name’s rating…
Didn’t think you even watched Harukana Receive but yay someone agrees on it. As always, thanks for the mention!

    1. “Now that really is controversial on Steins;Gate. ”

I live on the edge! that’s another way for saying I have questionable taste at times.

“Didn’t think you even watched Harukana Receive but yay someone agrees on it. ”

I looked forward to it every week. I even liked the stories, though I feel like that’s someone saying they buy Playboy for the articles.

Those Playboy does publish good articles, and they pay well…

      1. Dont worry it wouldnt be interesting if everyone had the same opinions.
But steins is one of my 10/10 anime so i am a bit sad you didnt quite like it as much.
Its funny but for real the other aspects were great too, i genuinely enjoyed their friendship and the concept of like… Finding a hobby and working hard at it… Also the music was top notch

        1. “But steins is one of my 10/10 anime so i am a bit sad you didnt quite like it as much.”

Maybe I just tried to watch it at the wrong time. I’ll try to pick it up again.
