Other Posts to Crow About – 2019 Week 27 Edition

Twenty-seventh week of 2019 edition!

This is a Crow’s eye view of the posts that caught my attention this week. Typically, they’ll be posts that celebrate some aspect of anime, like strong characters, moments of beauty, or amazing worlds.

There are only two rules:

  1. I have to find the site to read it. I publish a list of the sites I review every week, so please do look for your site! If you don’t see it, I’d love for you to mention your site in the comments so I can add it!
  2. Your post had to have been published during the last seven days (or so)

Remember, you can find a list of the sites I check every week here

There’re a lot of good posts in the anime blogosphere. I hope this article helps you find some of them!

Review Order

This week, I reviewed the sites in alphabetical order (A to Z).

AngryAnimeBitches

Dr. Stone Episode 1 [First Impression]

It’s premiere week for Summer 2019! I don’t know about you, but I find the first week of a new season to be stunningly hectic. Which shows will I watch? Which should I review? What do the other ani-bloggers think of the new series? It’s all a load of fun, especially when you happen across a review that touches on some of the things I found particularly enjoyable. Take this review of Dr. Stone by Oki on AngryAnimeBitches, for instance. Several things jumped out at me as I watched the first episode, and by golly, this article talked all of them — and more! If you’re not sure if you want to watch the series, try reading this review. And if you’ve already seen it, check out the review anyway — it’s like celebrating the new show with friends!

Kanata no Astra – 01 [First Look]

Keeping with the theme of new shows in the Summer 2019 season… Did you know we’ve had a shortage of dramatic science fiction series in recent years? Well, according to my tastes, anyway! I’m always looking for good science fiction anime, so when I read about Kanata No Astra, I had to wonder — would it take after the campy original series Lost in Space, the kinda dorky movie Lost in Space, the new series Lost in Space, or would it — fingers crossed! — go its own way? Well, we have an answer in Flareknight’s review on Anime Evo! This article did a great job of describing what was good about the premiere. Give it a read to see why this might be the best science fiction anime series this season!

Confessions of an Overage Otaku

CHARACTER ANALYSIS: ASUKA LANGLEY SORYU

It seems like now that Neon Genesis Evangelion has been available on Netflix for awhile, the ratio of hyperbolic to insightful posts has returned to a manageable level. The show’s important, and not only because of its significant contribution/impact on the anime industry. From my perspective, its rich and expansive world and its compelling plot formed the perfect vehicle for its strongest elements: its characters. I’ve read a lot of great posts about Shinji Ikari and Rei Ayanami. Now I can add another post about another character to the list: This post by The Overage Otaku on Confessions of an Overage Otaku. This article takes on Asuka Langley Soryu, who’s probably my second favorite character after Misato Katsuragi. This article has the best insights of Asuka’s character that I’ve read, and it explains why she is the way she is. I watched the series a long, long time ago, and it was fun reading an article that helped me appreciate the character even more than I did before.

I Drink and Watch Anime

Sena, Haganai’s Poor Pretty Rich Girl

While we’re on the subject of character studies, have I mentioned lately much much I love Haganai: I Don’t Have Many Friends? The main male character, Kodaka Hasegawa, reminds me of myself to an uncomfortable extent, at least in some ways. But fortunately, he was far from the most interesting character in the cast. My favorite hands down was Rika Shiguma, but that by no means she was the only one who I thought was fascinating. This post by Irina from I Drink and Watch Anime is a great study of Sena Kashiwazaki. She’s beautiful, she’s rich, and she’s… Well, I’d rather you read the article, because as many times as I’ve watched the series and as much as I love the characters, this article still gave me new stuff to think about.

5 Reasons To Watch: Monster Musume

One of the first posts I published here was In Defense of Monster Musume. I have my reasons, and yes, some of them are the obvious ones: The monster girls who stared in Every Day Life with Monster Girls were beautiful. And they weren’t afraid — or even hesitant! — to show it. But more than that, they were interesting characters who had their own drives and personalities. Not only that, but the male lead, Kimihito Kurusu, honestly tried to treat them well. He even had two super powers: Unlimited Cooking and Takes a Beating! Because of how much I like this show, I was really happy to come across this post on Reasons to Anime.  As its title suggests, it gives you five reasons you should watch this series. As a self-proclaimed expert in all things Monster Musume, I endorse all five reasons!

Fire Force Production Notes 01

One way I gauge if a series is something I want to review is how powerful it affects me. I recently finished watching the first Fire Force episode, and before I was 2 minutes in, I knew I’d have to review it. I immediately found myself in a world that I didn’t understand — but I wanted to! By the end of the episode, there were several moments where — and I kid you not — I realized I’d stopped breathing. The spectacle had so drawn me in that I momentarily lost my place in time. Only a few works of fiction have done that, and they include The Lord of the Rings and Made in Abyss. That kind of impact isn’t magic. It’s art, and this post by KViN on SakugaBlog offers some great insights into how the episode came to be. I’ll just give you a single hint: What the artists accomplished was way more awesome than magic!
