Other Posts to Crow About – 2020 Week 8 Edition

This is a Crow’s eye view of the posts that caught my attention this week. I look for posts that celebrate amazing moments in anime or otherwise blow me away with their wit and charm. I check hundreds of sites, and I can tell you that the ani-blogging community’s quality and quantity of posts is amazing. I hope this helps you find some of them!

You can see the list of the sites I check here!

Review Order

This week, I reviewed the sites in reverse alphabetical order (Z to A).

When Sirius Writes

Zombieland Saga is not your typical idol anime

Do you find that you feel defensive of the shows you most love? I do. Take a series like Zombieland Saga. First, it’s nostalgic for me, because I got to write a collab review with Irina from I Drink and Watch Anime. In addition to being a talented writer, she has a keen eye for character, and Zombieland Saga had exceptional characters! But it’s more than that. The series had a certain something — or somethings — that really resonated with me. There are ideas and themes and traits and characters and situations and… Okay, sorry. I get excited talking about this show. That’s why, when I came on this post by Will Sirius from When Sirius Writes, I was both excited and cautious. I had to wonder: Would the post treat my favorite zombie idols with respect and admiration? I’m happy to report — and you probably guessed this by now! — that the post was fantastic. It was great to relive some of the best reasons for enjoying the show. See if you agree!

Never Argue with a Fish

Anime Corner: Granbelm Review

Crow’s World of Anime celebrates beautiful moments in anime. Every week, I set out in search for other bloggers’ posts to highlight in Other Posts to Crow About. I only have a minute or two; I check over 350 sites, after all! And in all of my searches, I have rarely come across an opening that so completely captures the spirit of Other Posts to Crow About. Check this out: “Okay, I’m just going to be upfront about this, I love this show and I mean the heart throbbing, head-over-heels kind of love, so be prepared for gushing.” That’s how Chris George Joynson starts his post about Granbelm over on Never Argue with a Fish. The rest of the post is in the same spirit, and it was a blast to read! And as always, I love the distinctive artwork. If you wonder if you might like Granbelm, I’m sure this post will convince you to take a look. And if you already like it, go have fun co-celebrating the series!

Inskime

AR: Sound! Euphonium and the Frustration of Failure

One indication of a series’ quality is how many posts it generates while it’s airing. Look at The Promised Neverland. Every week during its run, we not only saw reviews, but analysis and opinion pieces. But what about a series that still generates posts five years after it aired? That suggests the show had a lasting impact, and that’s exactly the case for Sound Euphonium. This week, Inskidee from the site Inskime gives us new evidence of that show’s enduring popularity. The subject is what I suspect is the series’ greatest strength: Some of its key characters, like Kumiko Oumae, Reina Kousaka, and Asuka Tanaka. What’s so great about them? Well, aside from credible rumors I’ve heard about shrines being erected to the goddess who is Asuka, I think it’s best if you head on over and read the post. And if my description doesn’t make you want to click, consider this: The post makes use of some exception fan art.

DoubleSama

SOMALI AND THE FOREST SPIRIT EPISODE 7

We just talked about how longevity is one sign of a series’ quality. Another is how well a given show or its world supports interesting conjecture. What faction does Joker represent in Fire Force? Just how deep is the abyss in The Abyss? The better a show’s world supports this kind of conversation, the higher the probability that the show’s interesting. That’s why I enjoyed this article by DoubleSama on the site DoubleSama. In this case, the post talks about episode 7, The Footsteps that Stalk the Witches, from Somali and the Forest Spirit. It asks the question, “What is the title referring to?” It’s a fascinating bit of detective work, and having already watched the episode, I can tell you that I appreciate it more after reading this post. See if you have a similar experience!

CFREEZE’S ANIME BLOG

My Top 100 Anime of The Decade (20-1)

I enjoy lists, but I have to admit I’m becoming a bit of a list snob. I don’t like lists that are simply click bait. I don’t like lists that are too long. I mean, I have an attention span so short that even modern micro processors like Intel’s i7 have a hard time representing it. This week, I found a list that sailed past my filters, and I found it in Cfreeze’s post on CFREEZE’S ANIME BLOG. If I ask you what your favorite series were from the last decade, I bet at least 5 of them, and maybe 10, are in this list of the top 20 anime from the last decade. It’s a great collection of recent and a little older (though not more than 10 years, of course!) shows. I was particularly impressed by the choices for 14, 11, 10 (especially 10!), 7, 6, 5, 4 (another especially!)… Okay, you get the picture. Check out the list to see if your favorites are there! My one regret? No mention of Re:CREATORS. Looks like my work isn’t done!

    1. “I always worry that I’m going to put someone off when I go full gush but i just can’t help myself.”

Personally, I enjoy that kind of post. I’m not convinced there’s any such thing as an objective review, and I like understanding different perspectives!

For that, of course, the writer has to actually come out and state their perspective. One of the things I liked about your post is I didn’t need to burn energy decoding it. I knew going in your enjoyed the series, and that was helpful.

  1. Thank you for mentioning my post! I worked super hard on this post, and having it mentioned here is an honor. I’ll consider watching Re:Creators someday.

      It shows!

      “I’ll consider watching Re:Creators someday.”

Cool! I’d love to hear what you think of it after you watch it. I wish it was streaming on more than just Amazon Prime…
