Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 2 Review – Quick Summary

In Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 2, “A Moody Cat’s Hesitation: Antipasto in the Moonlight,” the Gourmet Guild dared to assault the lair of a rainbow-silk producing monster. The guild Carmina, who’s also an idol group, wanted the silk to make new costumes. While the rest of the Gourmet Guild delivered the silk, an old acquaintance of Karyl demanded her presence. Karyl’s trepidation turned to terror when she realized just how much that acquaintance knew about the events near the end of the first season. Will Karyl be able to retain her freedom? Or her life? And just what else is this acquaintance going to ask Karyl to do?

Favorite Quote from Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 2

Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 2: I think Kokkoro was honest in her praise

I don’t think Karyl looks like she feels complimented. Do you think she looks like she feels complimented? Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

If this were almost any other show, I would have thought the speaker intended my favorite quote to be snarky. But given how this is Princess Connect and the speaker was Kokkoro, I think it was simply a case where she intended to be complimentary, but it came out wrong.

At least, I thought it did. See what you think!

They had just come from delivering the rainbow silk to Tsumugi Mayumiya, where they eventually met the other two members of Carmina, Nozomi Sakurai and Chika Misumi. Before Nozomi and Chika arrived, Tsumugi had all four of our heroes, including Yuuki, modeling new idol outfits. Yuuki didn’t mind at all, and in fact seemed to be having fun. Kokkoro looked as adorable as always, and she seemed to have fun, too. Pecorine owned it. It was like she was born to model.

Karyl? Well, she pretended to hate it, and she actually might have. But she looked as pretty as you would expect.

Which is what Kokkoro tried to say (08:50) when she said, “Seeing you in such a cute costume felt so new and different.”

Wouldn’t that sound insulting coming from someone else? But from Kokkoro, I really think she meant it as a compliment.

Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 2: Tsumugi wanted to help others shine

Sometimes, the joy is not standing in the spotlight, but in making sure it sparkles, just so, on someone else. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: A King Maker or A King?

This might be repetitive for some of you, and if it is, thank you very, very much. It means you’ve read way more of my posts than is healthy!

I consider myself a considerably better editor than writer. Yeah, yeah, it’s probably obvious to all of you, but humor me, would you? The reason this is important is that there’s this one compliment I received in 1980 that I rank as my favorite of all time.

My friends and I were publishing a local newspaper. I shared editor in chief responsibilities with my uncle, and I took lead with layout and typing. Not type-setting. We all lived in a rural community, and the only typesetting equipment I had ever seen was at Ohio University in Athens. No, I would hand-write all of the articles on graph paper. We knew how wide the columns were, so when I ran out of room to add more words, I would know how many extra spaces I needed to add as I hand-typed the lines to right-justify the test.

Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 2: Tsumugi acted as the seamstress for her guild, Carmina

Tsumugi made the outfits so her friends could shine. I don’t think she even noticed how much they made her shine, too. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

There was no automatic justification. Only me, my Smith Corona Classic 12, and the graph paper. Nostalgia is big these days. Do I miss those times?

Oh my God, no. Typing on a manual typewriter? I never want to do that again!

Anyway. One of my friends had written an article and gave it to me to edit. I think he expected me to rip it apart. I spent about 30 minutes marking it up, then typing the columns. I handed him the typed version for his review.

He read it, thought about it, and then frowned. “I can’t tell what changes you made,” he said.

Delivery: Tsumugi Knew What Was What

I have never received a higher compliment. I had cleaned up a lot of grammar problems and rearranged some sentences. But I didn’t make any major changes in thought. My goal when I edit is to sand off the edges that keep the writer’s own voice from shining. So when he made his off-hand remark, in that moment, I had achieved my goal. I can’t tell you how satisfying that is.

That’s why I’m choosing a moment with Tsumugi as my favorite. It reminded me of that compliment. Karyl saw Tsumugi practicing late the night before the concert and asked why. Shouldn’t she be resting?

“When Nozomi dances, she shines really brightly,” Tsumugi said (15:25). “And Chika’s singing has the power to pull in everyone who hears it. But I don’t have any of that.” Saying she felt the need to practice harder than both so she wouldn’t detract from their performance, she added, “I love making others shine.”

Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 2: Tsumugi's words affected Karyl

Karyl listened to Tsumugi’s words and pondered them. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

No lie. Hit me like a ton of emotional bricks. Goddamn, I miss helping others shine. I’m tempted to be melodramatic and say in that instant, Tsumugi made me see the lie of my life’s career choices. But that would be stupid. I made my choices to give my family the best chance of financial survival. So, it would be foolish to regret those decisions.

But I’m not dead yet. And a freaking anime series just gave me a renewed sense of self and hope that I might be able to regain a part of me I thought lost. I am pretty sure that means this was a good episode!

What did you think of Karyl’s reaction to being forced to become a model? What were your favorite moments? Please feel free to let me know in the comments!
