Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 1 Review – Quick Summary

In Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 1, “A Walk on the Gourmet Side ~Curiosity Is the Best Bouquet Garni~,” it was a normal day for the Gourmet Guild. Yuuki chopped wood, Kokkoro watered the flowers, Pecorine went into town to find choice ingredients for breakfast, and Karyl slept in. All was peaceful until, at breakfast, Kokkoro announced that the guild had given her a damaged map to some spice. And not just any spice, but legendary spice! Will the Gourmet Guild be able to find it, given the quality of the map? Will Karyl be able to stop complaining along the way? And how many random wild beasts will try to eat Yuuki – per day?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 1: Karyl didn't want to die by noming

I almost felt bad laughing so hard at her misfortune. Almost! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I felt my body relaxing and my blood pressure dropping as I watched this episode. Seeing the four of them enjoy their breakfast brought upon me a tremendous sense of calm and goodwill. I like these characters. I like the messes they get into. And I like spending time with them.

Speaking of the messes they get into, in this episode, the Gourmet Guild found themselves lost in an above-water coral sea. It was as beautiful and fantastic as they were lost, which is to say, very. Karyl, never the most hardy adventurer, complained about the lack of meat. So, Pecorino and Yuuki went hunting.

They found and butchered some kind of creature that was mostly mouth. As they enjoyed the meal, dozens of the creature’s kin showed up to protest. It was a tense situation. All four of our heroes took up their weapons and prepared to defend themselves. And then Karyl barfed and collapsed, unable to move. Turns out the creature’s meat contained a neurotoxin.

As the monsters closed in to turn the Gourmet Guild into a meal, Karyl had just enough energy to say (11:40), “I don’t want to die in such a stupid way!”

The only reason I could laugh at their dire situation was that I knew they’d get out of it. That, and it was such a perfect Karyl in Distress moment!

Best in Show Moment for Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 1

A simple shot, with a simple soundtrack. It packed a world of feelings in a single instant. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Favorite Moment: Sometimes Simple is Best

Do you remember back in season 1, in episode 13, “Lost Princess ~Garnished with Smiles~?” The scene in Lanosol Castle, when Pecorine told her story to Kokkoro? The story about how Pecorine had left the castle on a journey to hear her people, but when she came back, an evil magician had made everyone in the castle, even her mother and father, forget about her?

Remember how Pecorine collapsed to her knees, weeping from the fear that her new friends Yuuki, Karyl, and even Kokkoro, would forget her, too? The moment when Kokkoro hugged her friend and told her their friendship was a precious treasure was sublime. Those are the kinds of moments I hope to see when I watch anime.

Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 Episode 1: The first episode brought the humor and feels

The second season brought the comedy, that’s for sure! But it wasn’t alone! The feels came along for the ride! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

The poignancy of Pecorine’s story (or should I say, Princess Eustiana’s story) still hits hard, even though it’s been a year and a half since I saw that episode. Which is why my favorite moment of this episode stopped my breathing.

It was a quick shot, just after we saw Kokkoro say good morning to Yuuki. We saw some happy scenes of townsfolk waking up and getting ready for the day. Then the camera showed Pecorine standing on a tower, hands at her sides, her hair blowing in the wind. With a terribly longing expression, she gazed at the castle that used to be her home (01:05). We’re not a minute and a half into the first episode, and I’m almost in tears.

If that’s not good anime, I don’t know what is.

What did you think of what they discovered in the end? What were your favorite moments? Please feel free to let me know in the comments!

  1. I really appreciate Cygames (mostly a mobile game company) as an anime producer. They’re shows are usually fun, and they let the people make good stuff, even it’s not strictly related to the content: Rage of Bahamut, Umamusume, Granblue Fantasy. Then their original stuff, like Zombieland Saga. They seem to take anime as seriously as their core business. They’re even involved in anime where their connection isn’t obvious to me (like Made in Abyss or Yuri on Ice).

And this show is now made by the very own studio: Cygame Pictures, who are who make this anime (what was their first anime? Manaria Friends? – Just looked it up; it was a one-shot ONA in the Bladerunner franchise – how did this happen, I wonder?)

I’d say their trackrecord as a producer is pretty solid, no? Princess Connect and Manaria Friends are pretty much the only in-house products made by their own studio so far, but that’s not too shabby a line-up either. They’re really good at providing good, likable fun. I do wonder, though, how much influence they actually have: they tend to be listed mid to bottom at MAL. In any case, I like them, and they’re involvement in a show tends to be a good sign, if nothing else.

    1. I didn’t know they were responsible for Manaria Friends! I thought that series was gorgeous.

Then I see MAL has it as 6.65… Huh.

I guess the real measure will be their sales figures. But I got a lot of enjoyment out of Princess Connect season 1 and Manaria Friends, so I have a very favorable impression of the studio.

And I didn’t know they had any connection at all to Made in Abyss. Glad you pointed that out!

  2. So glad this series is back. This episode was a riot from start to finish. They didn’t waste a minute. Even the OP and ED were incorporated into the episode. It looks like it’s going to be more of the same with this season which can only be a good thing.
