Review: Campione! Episode 5 Best in Show

Quick Summary

In Campione! episode 5, “Unpleasant Days,” Yuri Mariya wrestled with feelings she didn’t even know she had. It took her sister Hikari Mariya’s teasing to make her realize she was developing romantic feelings for the Campione Godou Kusanagi — feelings she still tried to deny! Erica Blandelli recognized that Yuri’s sixth sense would be of benefit to Godou, so she urged him to develop a relationship to her. The only stipulation? Yuri had to be clearly the subordinate to Erica and she could be the only other woman Godou had a relationship with. But even as Godou helped Yuri buy a phone, Liliana Kranjčar, under orders from her own Campione, was tailing Yuri and Godou, waiting for… what? What were her intentions towards Yuri? And why was there another Campione in Japan, anyway?

Best Moment in the Show

I don’t care how powerful he is. I felt sorry for Godou in this scene! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I love to see how characters react to stressors, especially stressors related to their core beliefs or personality. Yuri has been on edge around Erica since the very beginning. Erica is everything Yuri is not — brash, wildly self-confident, outgoing, and utterly comfortable with her sexuality. I’m not suggesting anything is wrong with Yuri, but she’s not any of those things. Well, she’s confident in herself, but not to the same degree as Erica.

So after a morning where her little sister planted the idea that Yuri might actually become the new Campione’s “wife,” Yuri had a hard time getting the idea out of her head. It was with that thought in mind that she opened the door to class — and saw Erica brazenly sitting in Godou’s lap. Erica was also loudly bragging about how he had had to coax her awake, which triggered enraged and jealous looks from the boys and knowing smiles among the girls.

Most of the girls, that is. Yuri didn’t smile. Well, she sort of smiled, but her glowing red eyes suggested it wasn’t a happy smile. First, she began to sternly talk to Godou, saying (06:01), “I can’t believe you’d act so lewdly here, in what’s supposed to be a wholesome house of learning!” Erica just watched, smiling and blinking slowly.

Yuri was seriously displeased by what she saw. Erica’s explanation didn’t exactly help. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Then Yuri tried to lecture Erica about how a lady from the Blandelli family should not be so “shameless.” Erica’s explanation that she was his knight, so Godou owned not only her sword, but her body.

That didn’t sit well with Yuri. In a move that was pretty much Yuri throwing caution to the wind, she said that there was a time and place for everything — and the middle of a classroom was neither the time nor the place for such physical activity. Yuri and Erica’s eyes locked. Yuri, who until now had shown only a few indications of such steel, would not back down.

I loved how the animation showed Yuri’s resolve take the shape of a dragon, while Erica’s took the shape of a Tiger (06:22).

It should be noted that Erica’s smile never faltered. I think Godou keeping silent was one of his better decisions.

I wonder if this was the moment when Erica decided that Yuri would be a good addition to their little “family?”
