Review: Campione! Episode 7 Best in Show

Quick Summary

In Campione! episode 7, “Wind, Rain, Wolf,” Erica Blandelli held their position as Godou Kusanagi retreated to regroup with Yuri Mariya. Erica found herself facing Duke Sasha Dejanstahl Voban’s knight Liliana Kranjčar, who ordinarily would not be such a challenge. But Erica was tired from her earlier battles, and Liliana’s attacks were relentless. How long can she hold out? Meanwhile, Godou’s rapid retreat left him dangerously exhausted. Her magic healing power unable to penetrate Godou’s innate magical defense, Mariya was reduced to using an old folk remedy, with questionable results. Fortunately, Mariya found herself in the grips of her sixth sense, which gave her some insights to Voban’s powers. Will she be able to communicate her insights to Godou in time? Can Erica hold out? Or will Godou be forced to take losses of the sort he’s never had to take before?

Best Moment in the Show: Mariya Plants One on Godou

Mariya has courage the equal of Erica’s. She just needed the right circumstance to prove it. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I guess it’s Mariya’s turn this week, since Erica was in the Best in Show moment last week! After all of Mariya’s hesitations and lack of confidence, it was nice to see her not only put herself forward, but to actually take the lead for a change.

I knew she had it in her!

Based on Mariya’s earlier sixth sense, Godou had learned that Voban had acquired the divine power of Apollo. Using that knowledge, he and Erica had planned and unleashed their attack. It was completely effective! Godou’s golden sword severed Voban’s power of Apollo.

Unfortunately, Voban had more than just Apollo’s power at his disposal. When Godou realized that his attack was successful but ultimately ineffective, he was momentarily at a loss. What should he try next? Erica and Liliana stepped in to protect him from Voban’s undead as he considered his next move. But no matter how much time they bought him, he was still at a loss.

Mariya experienced moment of sixth sense where she perceived that Voban’s latest attack leveraged the power of Osiris. She tried to tell Godou to remake his sword with that knowledge, but he didn’t know what she knew. Simply knowing the god’s name wasn’t enough. Mariya began to panic until Erica said that her idea was the right one. Godou just didn’t have enough knowledge. When the desparate Mariya asked what she should do, Erica just winked at her.

Erica can communicate a lot with a simple gesture. Godou has no idea how lucky he is… Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

After a moment’s consideration, Mariya brought her hands to her mouth and blushed (13:20). In the middle of a life and death battle, with literally everything they had on the line, Mariya was blushing because she had realized she needed to kiss Godou and transfer her knowledge to him.

And this is where it started to get cool.

She almost panicked, then got herself under control. She rushed forward to where Godou was struggling with the half-formed sword. Godou himself was starting to get worried; nothing he did would bring the sword under control. He was surprised to see Mariya rush up to him and say something about not being able to do anything four years ago. Saying (13:48) “I still want to help,” she hurled herself at him and planted a resolute kiss right on his lips. No hesitation. No self consciousness. She up and kissed him in public, right in front of Erica and Liliana.

Even more, when he tried to pull away, himself feeling a little self-conscious, she pulled him back to her. “If our hearts aren’t united,” she said (14:18), “this is pointless.”

When Godou’s nerve faltered (well, I guess he is just a kid…), it was Mariya who brought him back to the task at hand. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Within moments, his sword had reformed, and he was able to assault Voban’s powers that he had acquired by defeating Osiris. It wasn’t Mariya’s fault that Osiris wasn’t the last god whose power Voban had usurped… What was important is that Mariya saw what had to be done and seized the moment.

You know what else is cool? The idea that a simple kiss that have such importance — that Mariya could entrust her intimacy to Godou and know he would not only accept it, but treasure it. That they would both come away from the experience something more than they had been going into it.

That level of trust offered and trust returned, is beautiful.
