Review: Fairy gone Episode 13 Best in Show

Quick Summary

In Fairy gone episode 13, “Rain Sound’s Crime and White Snow’s Punishment,” we learn more about Ray Dawn’s motivations for destroying the Suna village — and for killing his brother, Jurgen, who had raised Marlya Noel from a baby. We also learned more about how Veronica Thorn befriended Marlya, and how the “blessed child” rescued the “cursed child.” So what drove Ray to burn Suna 12 years ago? What drives him even now as he rides in a motorcade and accepts accolades from the people? And what is Veronica planning to do from the balcony where she’s hiding along the motorcade’s route?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Best Moment in the Show

I still don’t fully understand her motivations, but Veronica was a perfect friend to Marlya. Which was exactly what she needed in that moment. Capture from the Funimation stream.

The episode’s primary goal seemed to be to establish Ray Dawn’s motivation for destroying Suna, the fairy village where he had been born, as well as his vendetta against fairies in general. While I appreciated the added insights into his character, I really enjoyed seeing more of how Veronica and Marlya’s relationship developed.

Suna was not only the fairy village. It was a superstitious village. Marlya’s father Ivan died the day she was born, because he was killed by an enormous fairy-possessed bear (the fairy at that stage was called an imaginal as opposed to the primordials we’ve already met). Her mother died shortly after childbirth. Those two misfortunes prompted the villagers to say she was called a cursed child. We already knew that. This episode drove the point home with several scenes of children and even adults chasing her off.

As she sought refuse in the forest, she came on a swarm of fairy primordials. She reached out to touch one, but stopped when she felt someone grab her other hand. Standing there was a smiling Veronica, who said she had to be careful not to scare them off the primordials.

Marlya was startled when Veronica grabbed her hand. Capture from the Funimation stream.

The two sat down, and Marlya obviously felt uncomfortable. When asked about it, Marlya told Veronica that if she were nice, bad things will happen — they always do (14:33).

“I don’t believe in that stuff,” Veronica said, and Marlya starts to cry. Veronica, the older girl, put her arm around Marlya and said, “It’s okay. Absolutely nothing bad is going to happen.”

We still don’t know why Veronica took a liking to Marlya, but that scene felt so natural and warm that it gives me some hope for the rest of the series.

  1. I really enjoy this anime, what I can’t understand is what reasons Mariya character has to protect Ray Dawn when he even tried to kill her.

    1. “what I can’t understand is what reasons Mariya character has to protect Ray Dawn when he even tried to kill her.”

      It’s a good question.

Have you seen the next episode yet? Marlya gave an answer, but it was more like she was looking beyond the question. If that makes sense.

  2. I liked this episode. We learned very little new about how Veronica and Mariya met, but we did learn more background, most notably about why Mariya’s “cursed”, and about Veronica’s motivation. I’ve already forgotten about Ray Dawn’s motivation, though, having only vague memories. They’ll re-activate when it becomes relevant in the show. I do know that this episode basically didn’t change how I view him. Nobody should trust him. It’s risky. I’m not convinced he’ll be the final boss.

Overall, I walked away with a favorable impression. I almost wish this had been episode 1 — it feels like a good starting point if they’re going to rely so heavily on flashbacks.

I hear you. Anyone who would murder his own brother so callously is not trustworthy.

“I’m not convinced he’ll be the final boss.”

At this stage, I’m not 100% he’s even an enemy. He’s unquestionably misguided. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a fairy stage past imaginals. Maybe they’re involved? With as much as the plot jumped around before this episode, I don’t think I’d recognize foreshadowing if it walked up and introduced itself.
