Review: Fairy gone Episode 18 Best in Show

Quick Summary

In Fairy gone episode 18, “Dancing Mouse and Broken Horn,” Nein Auler gave the Minster of the Ministry of Fairies a warning that she suspected a traitor was working in his Ministry. His promise to look into it did not seem to completely satisfy the Dorothea Director. Elsewhere, factions converge on Mazria, where Eajey Daven Thor had setup his castle headquarters. Among the factions are Bitter Sweet (with Patricia Pearl reluctantly in tow) and Dorothea — who had most of their agents in the field. But there seemed to be someone else there, too: someone who was killing Eajey’s lookouts. Will Eajey’s remaining lookouts discovery Dorothea as they try to infiltrate the castle? Will Bitter and Patricia encounter them first? And who’s the third faction?

Best Moment in the Show

It takes a lot to rattle Bitter. Way more than a single dude with a pistol. Capture from the Funimation stream.

Bitter Sweet finally gets a Best in Show moment! It’s fitting, because she steals whatever scene she’s in. It was really close call back in episode 16. She almost picked up the award then. It’s not her fault that Marlya Noel had a particularly good episode!

In this episode, Bitter and Patricia had just arrived in Mazria. Patricia’s not particularly happy because it’s a really boring city. Bitter reminded her they’re there to retrieve Black Nine, one of the components of the Black Fairy Tome. Surrounding them are the broken husks of ornate buildings. Shacks built with scrap wood now line the streets, which are no longer as straight as they used to be.

All in all, it’s not a town that would hold much interest for Patricia.

Even as Bitter reminded Patricia of their mission, she stopped. Bitter had just noticed a man loitering in the shadow of one of the shacks. She cheerfully said “Hi!” to him. Then he drew his pistol.

Patricia had some thoughts to express about the man pulling a gun on Bitter. Capture from the Funimation stream.

I just loved how cool Bitter was about the whole situation. Instead of cowering or even looking mildly alarmed, she asked (07:43), “Were you and I dating at some point?”

I loved how thoroughly in character she was in this moment!

It was icing on the cake when Patricia acted. I’m not sure if the guy was really stupid (maybe overly excited by the idea of dating Bitter?) or what, but Patricia somehow got behind the guy and smash him over the head with her trunk. Then she soundly scolded Bitter for letting her guard down. I really like the banter between these two.

What did you think of the Dorothea assault on the castle? What was your Best in Show moment? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Yeah, Patricia suddenly appearing behind the guy was a little awkward, but well, that’s the episode-to-episode writing here. It’s nowhere near as mind-boggling as the way Mariya saved Free. That’s… amazing athleticism. Invisible fairy jet pack? I really don’t think I see that sort of disjunct often: pretty good overall story, pretty lousy episodic writing. This could be a much, much better show. (You know, Fairy Gone is an underrated show, but as soon as you say that people are very likely to expect too much, so you can’t really say that out lound. It’s such an odd situation to be in. I susupect the show will be much better in memory than it was while actually watching it.)

How much better would that scene have been if Mariya’s fairy had thrown her? Or helped in some way?

“pretty good overall story, pretty lousy episodic writing. ”

Maybe Grancrest Senki? Though I have to admit that I despite the rushed-ness, I really enjoyed that series.

It’s like the movie Nacho Libre. I didn’t like it at all while I was watching it, but years later, I still quote it.

“Chancho, when you are a man, sometimes you wear stretchy pants in your room. Just for fun.”

But while I was watching it? Not so much…
