Quick Summary
In Fruits Basket episode 4, “What Year Is She?“, we find out that the girl looking for Kyou Souma at the end of the previous episode wasn’t some random stalker, but another member of the family, Kagura Souma. She’s so happy that Kyou is back that she beats him senseless. She also does substantial damage to the house in the process! Can Kyou survive her affections? Can Tooru Honda get on her good side? And just what sign of the zodiac is Kagura, anyway?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.
Tooru is so powerful she can even make the boar blush! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Best Moment in the Show
Back in episode 2, I compared Tooru to an irresistible force. This episode gave me more ammunition to defend that position — Tooru got through to yet another Souma! In this episode, we got to meet Kagura, whose cheerfulness is matched only by her rage — especially when it comes to Kyou. One moment, she was professing her epic love for him, to the point where she’d forgive him even if he had affairs (plural, mind you — just how little does she trust him?). The next moment, she’s spinning him above her head so fast that he created lift. Toward the end of the episode, she accidentally ran into the mail man and transformed into her zodiac sign name sake (the boar). Tooru picked her up (after Yuki Souma deflected the mail man) and said she thought she understood why Kagura loved Kyou so much. As you can probably guess, Kagura misunderstood and immediately pounced on Kyou’s head and blamed him for cheating on her. Tooru gently and politely explained that’s not what she meant (20:03). She had meant that she admired Kagura’s single-minded pursuit and wanted to emulate her. Kagura couldn’t believe what she had just heard — had Tooru really said she wanted to be like her? “Yes! I think that’s a fantastic trait!” Even in boar form, Kagura blushed. I’m beginning to think Tooru’s super power is touching the hearts of everyone in the Souma family!

“Random aside: In the Fruitsbasket horoscope, I’m a Kagura.”
You’re in great company, then!
This is a dumb question, but it’s entirely based on the Chinese zodiac, right? If that’s the case, it looks like I’m a Tiger.
Yes, it’s the Chinese Zodiac.
Little aside: some versions of the Chinese Zodiac have the cat in place of the rabbit (Vietnam, I think, not sure about others). The cat-version was the first I learned of, which confused me for a while. I knew that the rabbit version was the original by the time I watched Fruits Basket.
The pig/boar is so fuckin cute… I am so glad I don’t eat pig products anymore xD
I’m an omnivore, and it’s got me reconsidering! 🙂
I still haven’t given up beef because I need the iron… but pigs are just so smart (and cute), I couldn’t stand thinking of them as food anymore.
I worked on a farm when I was growing up, and I worked a lot with our pig herds. Can confirm: They’re intelligent! Almost too intelligent at times!
Random aside: In the Fruitsbasket horoscope, I’m a Kagura. (Her pig form is the most adorable so far, though Yuki rat form comes close.)
And, yes, that was a really cute scene.
