Review: Fruits Basket Episode 06 – Best in Show

Quick Summary

In Fruits Basket episode 6, “Perhaps We Should Invite Ourselves Over,” the school festival is underway, and both Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima are suspicious: Tooru Honda is far too familiar with Yuki Souma and Kyou Souma. Tooru hasn’t told them anything, so what’s going on? After the antics of Momiji Souma, Arisa and Saki find out the truth: Tooru is living with the Souma family! They’re taken aback. Is that arrangement healthy for Tooru? Can the Souma family be trusted? And worst of all, why didn’t Tooru confide in them?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Best Moment in the Show

Do Tooru’s protectors look like they mean business, or what? Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Before celebrating my favorite moment from this episode, can we just take a moment to appreciate how amazing Saki looks in a witch’s costume — especially the hat? Now that that’s out of the way, I’m not sure about you, but I thought this episode had tons of candidates for best moment. I finally had to give up selecting one among the dramatic or touching moments and instead choose a humorous moment. Arisa and Saki invited themselves over to the Souma household because they wanted to be sure Tooru was in good hands. Bless their concern! Shigure Souma, Yuki, and Kyou greeted the both of them at the door, and Shigure was his usual calm, smug self. He greeted them amicably and turned to listen to Kyou whisper his concerns about letting them in — especially Saki, who seems to have a reputation as not being someone to mess with. Shigure is trying to reassure them when Saki says, “A dog…” (12:18).

The three of them freaked out for a moment before Saki finished, “Is here.” Apparently, a local dog had picked that moment to visit.

Remember that Shigure’s zodiac form is a dog? In that instant, so did Shigure! Even though he was trying to be all calm, cool, and mature, he was as jumpy as Yuki and Kyou. I don’t blame him: Arisa and Saki both looked like they meant business, and Saki’s abilities — real or not — seem credibly dangerous!

  1. Heh, we’ve seen Kyou beset by cats, and Yuki’s asked rats to help retrieve Tohru’s stuff, so it’s no surprise that a dog would show up if you leave the door open for too long. Makes you wonder about some of the other family member. Imagine attracting horses or cattle. Or tigers. Or dragons…?

    1. “Imagine attracting horses or cattle. Or tigers. Or dragons…?”

      That’s a cool idea!

I wonder if the dragon would be mythical, or something like a Komodo dragon?

It’d be awkward to be at a Souma family event and Smaug shows up!
