Review: Fruits Basket Episode 23 – Best in Show

Quick Summary

In Fruits Basket episode 23, “You Look Well,” it’s final exam time, and Tooru Honda is devastated to learn that she failed one of her exams — in a subject that Yuki Shouma tutored her in! She’s wracked by guilt, and it doesn’t help that Saki Hanajima confides that she failed all of her exams. Worst of all, Tooru is terrified that she won’t be able to keep the promise to her mom to graduate from high school. As Kyou Shouma is walking her home, Tooru collapses. It seems she has contracted the dreaded anime cold! Will she survive? If she does, will she recover in time to take the make up exam? And will Saki rebound and advance to the next grade?

Best Moment in the Show

Some might suggest that Kagura has a terrible temper. I think she’s probably one of the more healthy members of the Shouma family… Capture from the Crunchyroll stream

I’m sorely tempted to pick the moment where we learn that Saki failed all of her exams so she could take the easier make up exams — simply because they were easier and because she might end up with a better grade!

But that would look like I’m playing favorites, so I’ll pick another moment. When Kyou and Yuki bring Tooru home from studying (after she took a nap and ate some of Kyou’s healing porridge), they find that Kagura Shouma has come to visit (15:28). She’s excited to see Kyou — really, really excited — and welcomes “her” Kyou home. Kyou closes the door in an attempt to keep her away. Of course, she crashes right through the door. I’m not sure how Kyou thought closing the door would help.

To Shigure Shouma, the damaged door was a reminder: If Kyou provokes her, Kagura will likely wreck whatever part of the house is nearby. So, when disaster was about to strike, he was ready.

You know, I should blame Shigure for using Kyou to save his furniture. But strangely, I kinda get where he’s coming from. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream

Kyou asked why Kagura had come, and she said just to see him. When he said, “Well, I don’t want to see you,” (16:13), she started to sniffle and say that he was mean. So she picked up the living room table and prepared to smash him with it.

Shigure came up behind Kyou, picked him up by the head, and casually tossed him to Kagura. She calmed down because she could just sit there and hold him. Shigure was happy because his living room was in one piece. And Tooru? She was happy because her tea tray and also intact. So everyone — except maybe Kyou — came out ahead.

I like Kagura. I’m not sure what the future holds for her, but I hope she finds happiness. Goodness knows the Shoumas need a healthy injection of happy!
