Quick Summary
In Midnight occult civil servants episode 4, “Fixed-Point Observation in Kabukicho,” Arata Miyako wakes up to find that Yuki doesn’t react well to alarm clocks and Huēhuecoyōtl now feels very comfortable visiting his old friend whenever he likes — even if Arata can’t remember their original friendship! Arata and his co-workers Kyouichi Sakaki and Seo Himezuka have to check up on some Anothers around the city to make sure they’re not hurting anyone. They start with some creatures that look like Chinese gorillas — and consume a prodigious amount of sake. Will Arata accept their offer to drink? If he does, what will they do to him? And who’s the big pink guy who just abducted a police officer?

Best Moment in the Show
Talk about something staring me in the face! And I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I didn’t see it until Arata did! We start the episode with the three amigos visiting several Anothers who stay about in the same place year round. We start with the very, very hard-drinking Anothers from China who look a lot like highly evolved gorillas. They ask Arata to drink with them, but Kyouichi and Seo remind him that with an Another, drinking might be a prelude to them chowing down on him — on just never knows. As they continue, they see a huge pink deity, Gio Gongen, dragging an unconscious police officer behind him. It’s nothing series, the god tells Arata. He just wants a drinking companion — for the next hundred years! Well, the policeman has a family, and Arata, Kyouichi, and Seo get dragged into a sake drinking contest with Gio Gongen — with Huēhuecoyōtl’s help, by the way! — and of course the humans can’t keep up. Seo falls unconscious, and Gio Gongen says they can bring in reinforcements if they want. Kyouichi tells Arata to get some other precincts to send drinkers, but who does Arata find? You’re smarter than I was, because you probably already guessed the Chinese evolved gorilla guys (19:48). Everything just clicked in that moment! And I must say, those evolved gorillas can really put away the alcohol!

I didn’t see it coming either, but it’s so obvious in hindsight. A fun conclusion.
I’m relieved that I’m not the only one!
